X-Men Reboot Unleashes Major Casting Reveals & 2028 Release Date

Marvel Studios has officially announced the inaugural members of the X-Men team within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), with executive Kevin Feige revealing the cast at D23. The long-anticipated X-Men movie is slated for release on May 5, 2028. This marks a significant milestone, as it will be the first proper X-Men film since Disney acquired Fox and its extensive library of mutant characters, integrating them into the MCU.

The newly unveiled cast for the MCU’s X-Men includes Sadie Sink as Jean Grey, Kit Connor as Cyclops, Samara Weaving as Emma Frost, Inde Navarrette as Rogue, Christopher Abbott as Professor X, and Maya Boyd as Storm. The primary antagonist for this new chapter will be the villainous Mr. Sinister, played by Adam Driver.

Before their official MCU debut, the X-Men had a rich cinematic history under Fox, with their last team assembly on screen being the 2019 film “Dark Phoenix.” That film featured a younger cast from Fox’s prequel series, including James McAvoy as Professor Charles Xavier, Michael Fassbender as Magneto, Jennifer Lawrence as Mystique, Nicholas Hoult as Beast, Sophie Turner as Jean Grey, Tye Sheridan as Cyclops, Alexandra Shipp as Storm, Evan Peters as Quicksilver, and Kodi Smit-McPhee as Nightcrawler. These actors starred in several prequel films such as “First Class,” “Days of Future Past,” and “Apocalypse.”

Prior to the prequel cast, Fox’s original “X-Men” trilogy stars included Patrick Stewart as Xavier, Ian McKellen as Magneto, James Marsden as Cyclops, Kelsey Grammer as Beast, Halle Berry as Storm, Alan Cumming as Nightcrawler, Famke Janssen as Jean Grey, and Rebecca Romijn as Mystique. While Berry and Janssen are not confirmed, many of these original “X-Men” cast members are set to reprise their roles in the upcoming MCU film “Avengers: Doomsday,” where they will cross over with MCU stars to battle Doctor Doom, played by Robert Downey Jr. Channing Tatum, who debuted as Gambit in “Deadpool & Wolverine,” will also join the team in “Doomsday,” which is scheduled for December 18.

The slow reintroduction of mutants into the MCU has been evident in recent years, with the hit animated series “X-Men ’97” on Disney+ and the billion-dollar blockbuster “Deadpool & Wolverine” bringing the characters back into force. Specific cameos have also paved the way, such as Patrick Stewart reprising his role as Professor Charles Xavier in “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,” and Kelsey Grammer appearing as Beast in the ending of “The Marvels.” The Fox X-Men franchise ultimately concluded anticlimactically with the 2020 spinoff “New Mutants,” leaving the X-Men without a cinematic home until now. With this official announcement, the X-Men are poised to return as a central part of the MCU, marking a new era for the beloved mutant heroes.
