Wolverine Unleashed? Hugh Jackman Hints at Future Return to Iconic Role!

Actor Hugh Jackman recently shared his updated stance on playing the iconic Marvel superhero Wolverine, stating on "The Graham Norton Show" that he will "never say 'never' ever again" when it comes to reprising the role. This declaration marks a significant shift from his previous announcement of retirement from the character after the critically acclaimed 2017 film, "Logan," which famously concluded with Wolverine's death. However, Jackman made a surprising return as the mutant seven years later in the highly anticipated 2024 Marvel blockbuster, "Deadpool and Wolverine."
Jackman elaborated on his evolving perspective, acknowledging the cyclical nature of public commitments in the entertainment industry. He confessed, "Every time you're on [talk show], you gotta go, ‘Nope, I’m not doing that again.’ But then you keep making another one. And it’s a big big hit. So are you gonna have to do it again? Maybe." He emphasized that while his initial decision to retire was genuine and deeply felt for several years, his mind eventually changed. During the "Deadpool and Wolverine" press tour, Jackman admitted that witnessing the first "Deadpool" movie complicated his resolve to stay retired, igniting a strong desire to see Wolverine and Deadpool together on screen. He felt a deep intuition that fans had always wanted to see these two characters interact since he first donned the claws. This conviction led him to spontaneously contact Ryan Reynolds, committing to the film before even informing his own agent.
Despite Jackman's enthusiasm, not everyone was immediately convinced about his return. Kevin Feige, president of Marvel Studios, confirmed to Empire that he initially cautioned Jackman against coming back. Feige advised him, "Don’t come back. You had the greatest ending in history with ‘Logan.’ That’s not something we should undo." However, "Deadpool and Wolverine" creatively circumvented this concern by utilizing Marvel's multiverse concept. As fans discovered, Jackman did not return as the specific iteration of Wolverine who met his demise in "Logan" but rather as a new variant of the character, allowing his previous narrative to remain intact.
The future of Jackman's Wolverine in the Marvel Cinematic Universe remains a topic of speculation. It is currently uncertain whether he will appear in the upcoming "Avengers: Doomsday" or its sequel, "Avengers: Secret Wars." Interestingly, many of Jackman's original "X-Men" co-stars, including veterans like Ian McKellen, Patrick Stewart, and James Marsden, are slated to appear in "Avengers: Doomsday," fueling further anticipation for potential crossovers and a broader mutant presence in the MCU.
