Wheel of Fortune Announcer Jim Thornton Embroiled in Shocking Scandal, Faces Termination

Longtime “Wheel of Fortune” announcer Jim Thornton was first suspended and subsequently fired by producer Sony Pictures Television following disturbing allegations stemming from an American Airlines flight in May. The news, initially reported by TMZ, detailed claims from a passenger who allegedly saw Thornton’s laptop open to a “disturbing chat room” containing “images and texts that made it appear it was a chat room for pedophiles.” TMZ included several unauthenticated photos reportedly taken by the passenger, showing comments and texts suggestive of inappropriate behavior toward minors.

According to the passenger, a flight attendant was informed, leading to authorities questioning Thornton at LAX when his flight landed. Although he was initially given permission to leave, the incident triggered a thorough investigation. Hollywood insiders who knew and worked with Thornton were reportedly stunned, as he generally maintained a positive reputation as a TV announcer and reporter, known for his roles in Los Angeles radio via KNX 1070 Newsradio and as a traffic anchor on KCBS-TV.

Thornton’s lawyer, Allison Hart, responded to the allegations by stating it was a misunderstanding. She told TMZ that Thornton had “become active in suicide-prevention advocacy since losing a close family member to suicide two years ago and he has spent time visiting chat rooms offering support to individuals suffering from suicidal ideation.” Hart asserted that the site was “not unlawful, there is no unlawful child pornography or other pedophilic content and my client never viewed, downloaded or consumed any child pornography whether on that commercial flight in May or at any other time. In short, my client did nothing wrong.” Thornton himself did not comment publicly on his suspension, and his lack of an active social media presence or website meant little information came directly from him.

Sony Pictures TV confirmed Thornton’s initial suspension, stating on a Tuesday that they had been “made aware of allegations concerning Jim Thornton. He has been suspended from ‘Wheel of Fortune’ and we are recasting while we conduct a thorough investigation.” Just hours after TMZ posted the alleged photos, Sony Pictures TV confirmed his termination. “Following a thorough investigation, Jim Thornton’s employment with ‘Wheel of Fortune’ has been terminated, effective immediately,” the studio announced. An interim announcer has reportedly revoiced all of Thornton’s parts for the new season, which is set to return on September 14, and no permanent replacement has been announced.

Thornton joined “Wheel of Fortune” in 2010 after the death of the show’s previous announcer, Charlie O’Donnell. He also served as a substitute announcer on “The Price Is Right” and was the voice of “Celebrity Wheel of Fortune” on ABC. His extensive career credits include voicing Johnny Gomez on “Celebrity Deathmatch,” acting as an announcer on “The Cleveland Show” and “Tim & Eric Awesome Show, Great Job!”, and lending his voice to several video games. He also appeared as a commercial narrator in the 2001 animated film “Monsters, Inc.” and voiced the 2011 Oscar-nominated short animated film “Let’s Pollute.” Locally in Los Angeles, Thornton had a decades-long media presence, having joined KNX 1070 Newsradio in 1985 as a traffic reporter and later becoming an afternoon anchor. He also provided traffic reports for KCBS-TV and worked for Westwood One Radio Networks, in addition to being the voice of L.A.’s KCOP-TV for four years. Throughout his career, he received numerous accolades, including an Edward R. Murrow award, Golden Mike awards, and an Emmy.
