Unthinkable Crime: 10-Year-Old Faces Court on Horrific Charges

In a deeply disturbing case from Cleveland, Ohio, a ten-year-old girl has made her initial court appearance after being charged with the rape and attempted murder of a five-year-old child. The accused girl, whose identity remains protected due to her age, is alleged to have participated in a brutal attack that left the younger child severely injured.
The victim's mother, Antavia Kennibrew, recounted the horrific discovery of her child in September. Upon retrieving her daughter from a family member's home, Kennibrew found her unresponsive, covered in blood and bruises, with hair torn from her scalp. Describing the scene, she noted "signs of strangulation," a "big lump on her head," and clear indications that her daughter had been beaten and raped. Kennibrew expressed profound shock, stating, "My daughter did not look like herself. She was traumatized."
Following an investigation, authorities charged the ten-year-old girl and a nine-year-old boy with a litany of serious offenses, including attempted murder, rape, assault, kidnapping, and strangulation. Kennibrew detailed the alleged attack, claiming the youngsters led her daughter "by her hand and walked her to a field that was far away from the residence." In that field, she alleged, "they beat my daughter until she was unconscious," "ripped out her hair," "shoved sticks down her throat," "stripped her naked and strangled her with her own shirt."
The ten-year-old girl appeared in juvenile court, wearing a face mask and a pink coat, accompanied by an unidentified woman. Her lawyer entered a denial of the charges. The judge placed the girl on home detention, mandating an ankle monitor and ordering a competency evaluation. It was noted that the girl's parents were not present at the hearing. Her next court appearance is scheduled for January.
The nine-year-old boy, also charged in connection with the attack, failed to appear in court as scheduled. His lawyer requested a continuance, citing his mother's car troubles. The judge rescheduled his hearing for the following week, issuing a stern warning that an arrest warrant would be issued if he did not comply.
Antavia Kennibrew has passionately pleaded with the judge not to show undue leniency to the suspects because of their age. "This type of behavior doesn’t deserve grace. They knew what they were doing. And they were okay with that. They even played after not caring about my baby. Remember that," she asserted. She added that her daughter "has been going through it, and that’s how it should be for the offenders." Kennibrew further elaborated on her daughter's ongoing struggle, noting she is experiencing "behavioral problems" and "is mentally not OK." The mother conveyed her anguish, stating, "Me not getting justice for my daughter makes me feel like I failed her," and described seeing her daughter unrecognizable as "the worst thing ever!" The victim's condition included scalped hair, bruises and blood across her body, blood-filled eyes and mouth, and dirt under her nails. The case remains ongoing.
