Nigeria Ranks 48th Globally, 3rd in Africa for Indexed Research Performance. Who Are the Researchers Behind It?
Based on the research performance of researchers indexed in Nigeria across disciplines, AD Scientific Index ranks the country 48th globally and third in Africa, using citation, H-index and i10-index indicators53,580 is a big number to attach to one country’s research community.
Nigeria has 53,580 researchers listed in the latest AD Scientific Index, placing the country 48th globally and third in Africa for academic research performance.
South Africa ranks first in Africa, followed by Egypt, putting Nigeria in third place on the continental table.
But what exactly is being ranked?
The country's position is based on the academic research performance of researchers indexed in Nigeria, across disciplines, using indicators such as citations, H-index and i10-index.
The count covers researchers included in the database, while Nigeria’s position comes from how those researchers perform on measures such as citations, H-index and i10-index. It gives a picture of the research performance represented in the global database, rather than the size of Nigeria’s entire research workforce.
Where Nigeria’s Research Presence Is Concentrated
The University of Ibadan has the strongest position among Nigerian universities in the ranking.
UI is ranked 889th globally among nearly 19,800 universities and 14th in Africa. It is also the only Nigerian university to appear in the global top 1,000, with 1,586 researchers listed in the index.
The university's position is followed by the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Covenant University, the University of Lagos, Obafemi Awolowo University, the University of Ilorin and Ahmadu Bello University, among other Nigerian institutions.
Federal universities make upeight of Nigeria's top 10 institutions in the ranking.
The Researchers Behind Nigeria’s Ranking
The people behind that number are worth looking at too as the individual researchers give a closer look at the work represented in the country’s ranking.
Shafiu Mohammed of Ahmadu Bello University is among Nigeria's highest-ranked researchers, with a career H-index of 139 on AD Scientific Index. His research covers areas including global health, health systems and policy, health economics and epidemiology.
At the University of Ibadan, Mayowa Owolabi has a career H-index of 124. His research includes stroke, neurorehabilitation, neurogenetics and population health.

Another UI researcher, Olayinka Stephen Ilesanmi, has a career H-index of 119, with research interests including health policy and management, infection prevention and disease prevention.
The number of Nigerian researchers represented in the database has also risen from 53,214 in November 2025 to 53,580 in the October 2026 update, an increase of 366 in the number captured.
Their fields span health, engineering, agriculture, economics, technology and the natural sciences, showing the range of disciplines represented in Nigeria’s indexed research community.
Taken together, the ranking offers a snapshot of the researchers and institutions giving Nigerian academic work visibility in a global research database.
The 48th-place position is therefore less about a single university or field and more about the collective research record represented by thousands of Nigerian researchers.
