United Nigeria Airlines to Launch First Widebody Operation with Airbus A330 in 2026

United Nigeria Airlines is preparing for a major expansion with the introduction of its first widebody aircraft operation in July 2026.

The carrier will deploy an Airbus A330 secured through a wet-lease agreement with Air Anka Airlines, a move that signals its formal entry into long-haul international markets following traffic rights approvals granted in 2023.

Since commencing operations in early 2021, United Nigeria Airlines has focused on strengthening its domestic and regional footprint using a fleet of Embraer ERJ-145 regional jets.

The addition of the Airbus A330 represents a decisive shift in strategy, positioning the airline to compete on longer international routes while enhancing connectivity for Nigerian travelers.

The introduction of the A330 widebody aircraft marks a transformational moment for the airline’s growth trajectory. By expanding beyond short- and medium-haul services, United Nigeria aims to elevate its international competitiveness and contribute to Nigeria’s expanding presence in global aviation.

Under the wet-lease structure, Air Anka will provide the aircraft along with crew, maintenance and insurance, allowing United Nigeria to avoid the capital-intensive requirements of direct acquisition.

This model enables the airline to focus on route development, market positioning and operational readiness while leveraging Air Anka’s experience in widebody operations.

The expansion aligns with Nigeria’s broader aviation development agenda, supported by regulatory oversight from the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority.

Industry analysts say such partnerships reflect a growing maturity within Africa’s airline sector, where strategic leasing arrangements are increasingly used to fast-track fleet modernization and international expansion.

As preparations continue, passengers departing from Lagos can expect expanded long-haul options, new international destinations and enhanced onboard experiences.

The move reinforces Nigeria’s standing as a key aviation gateway in West Africa and signals United Nigeria Airlines’ ambitions to become a stronger player on the global stage.
