UK Erupts: Thousands Counter Far-Right Rally as PM Starmer Vows No Tolerance for Racism

London witnessed a stark ideological confrontation on Saturday as a massive far-right demonstration, led by activist Tommy Robinson, was met by a determined anti-fascist counter-protest. Thousands of activists, including members of the Take-It-Back (TIB) movement, gathered to oppose Robinson's event, which he controversially dubbed the country's “biggest free speech festival.”
Police estimated that over 110,000 of Robinson’s supporters, many adorned with English and British flags, flooded central London. In sharp contrast, approximately 10,000 anti-racist and anti-fascist demonstrators, representing various trade unions, community groups, and concerned citizens, defiantly convened in Trafalgar Square. Despite being heavily outnumbered, the counter-protesters stood firm, chanting “Refugees are welcome here” and displaying placards like “We cannot be silent,” challenging what they denounced as a dangerous agenda fueled by racism, Islamophobia, and nationalist extremism.
Tensions escalated significantly as the day progressed. Large contingents of far-right supporters, having splintered from their main march, maneuvered through side streets to encircle the anti-fascist protesters. This unexpected move caught police off guard, leaving the counter-protesters trapped and their exit blocked. Riot units were swiftly deployed, but violence erupted, plunging parts of central London into chaos. Officers described being “attacked on all fronts,” with fireworks and bottles hurled at mounted police. Barricades were hastily erected to protect the entrapped anti-fascist group, underscoring the intensity and aggression emanating from Robinson's supporters.
Despite the escalating hostility and real danger, the anti-fascist demonstrators maintained a peaceful and dignified stance. Faced with no immediate escape, they turned to their sound system, defiantly dancing to songs by Kneecap and Diana Ross, creating moments of resistance and unity amidst the surrounding aggression. Even bystanders, such as the Graell family from Barcelona who were caught inadvertently in the standoff after a visit to the National Gallery, experienced the unexpected chaos, with one family member remarking, “It has been interesting.”
On the far-right rally stage, figures sought to inflame an already tense atmosphere. French extremist Éric Zemmour invoked the “great replacement” conspiracy theory, while tech billionaire Elon Musk, appearing via video link, issued an ominous warning: “Violence is coming to you. You either fight back or you die.” This incendiary rhetoric further fueled sections of the crowd, validating the counter-protesters’ warnings about the event’s true intentions and contributing to the outbreak of violence.
Eventually, police gradually regained control, aided by a heavy downpour that helped disperse the far-right demonstrators. By 6:45 p.m., officers had cleared a safe passage, allowing the counter-protesters to exit. The immediate aftermath revealed broken glass and discarded beer cans strewn across central London, a stark contrast to the solidarity displayed by those advocating for anti-racism and inclusion. A final act of hostility occurred when an injured far-right marcher, escorted by police, spat at the departing anti-fascist crowd.
In the quiet aftermath, a sense of pride settled among the anti-racist demonstrators. They had not sought violence but had stood steadfast, 10,000 strong, in the face of hostility, intimidation, and danger, upholding their commitment to a more just and inclusive society. The Take-It-Back (TIB) UK movement also shared a video highlighting their participation in this significant counter-protest.
