Tragic Loss: Boston Singer Tommy DeCarlo Dies at 60 After Cancer Battle

Tommy DeCarlo, the celebrated lead vocalist for the iconic rock band Boston, passed away on Monday, March 9, at age 60 in Charlotte, North Carolina.
His family confirmed his death via Facebook, noting he had fought brain cancer with remarkable strength since his diagnosis in September.
Born on April 23, 1965, in Utica, New York, DeCarlo became a devoted fan of Boston at age 12.
He admired the band’s 1976 debut album, Boston, which reached No. 3 on the Billboard 200 and stayed on the charts for 138 weeks. Subsequent albums, Don’t Look Back (1978) and Third Stage (1986), both achieved No. 1 rankings, cementing the band’s legacy.
In the 1990s, DeCarlo began recording covers of his favorite Boston songs. A turning point came after the death of Boston’s original lead singer, Brad Delp, in March 2007.
DeCarlo wrote a tribute song and shared several covers online, which eventually caught the attention of Tom Scholz, Boston’s founding member, leading to his successful audition.
DeCarlo went on to serve as the lead or co-lead vocalist for every Boston touring lineup following his audition.
His voice is also featured on Boston’s 2013 album, Life Love & Hope, which reached No. 37 on the Billboard 200, with DeCarlo leading on tracks like “Someday,” “You Gave Up on Love (2.0),” and “The Way You Look Tonight.”
Beyond Boston, DeCarlo pursued independent projects. In 2012, he formed the band DECARLO with his son, releasing Lightning Strikes Twice in January 2020 under Frontier Records Srl.
In 2021, he released the audiobook Unlikely Rockstar – The Tommy DeCarlo Story and in December 2022, his solo album Dancing in the Moonlight debuted under Frontier Records, showcasing his ongoing creative drive.
DeCarlo’s musical journey—from fan to frontman—remains an inspiring story of passion, perseverance, and dedication to rock music, leaving a legacy that resonates with fans worldwide.
