Tragedy Strikes Rail Line: Warri–Itakpe Train Derailment Claims More Lives, Rocking Delta

A tragic incident unfolded on Monday with the derailment of the Warri–Itakpe train service near Agbor in Delta State, Nigeria, a critical standard gauge route facilitating both passenger and freight movement across several states. The accident, which occurred around 4:30 p.m., prompted an immediate and extensive emergency response, bringing together various government agencies and aid organizations.
The casualty count from the derailment saw several updates as emergency operations progressed. Initially, the Presidency confirmed three fatalities on Monday. However, by Tuesday, the Permanent Secretary for the Federal Ministry of Transport, Funsho Adebiyi, disclosed that four lives were lost, comprising two adult females, one adult male, and one infant passenger, with preliminary reports indicating four coaches capsized and one coach derailed. Later the same day, Kayode Opeifa, the Managing Director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), confirmed that the death toll had unfortunately risen to five.
The train was carrying a significant number of individuals, with a total of 482 persons on board, including 442 booked passengers and 40 crew members, security personnel, and third-party service providers. Among the notable individuals present during the accident were Senator Ede Dafinone, representing Delta Central Senatorial District, and Mr. Patrick Ukah, a former Secretary to the Delta State Government.

As of the latest reports, 24 serious injuries were recorded, with many other passengers sustaining varying degrees of injuries who are currently receiving medical attention. An NRC staff member was also reported to have suffered a traumatic limb injury but is in stable condition. Investigations into the exact cause of the derailment are ongoing, with relevant technical teams mobilized to determine the contributing factors. In the interim, the NRC Managing Director assured that safety assessments are being intensified across the entire rail network to mitigate the risk of future recurrences.
