Wedding Celebration Turns Fatal as Boat Accident Kills 14 in Kebbi

A tragic boat accident in Kebbi State has claimed the lives of at least 14 people, mostly women and a child, after a vessel carrying wedding guests capsized. The devastating incident occurred on Friday, February 13, 2026, in Gumbi village, located in Gumbi Ward of Yauri Local Government Area.
The victims were returning home after accompanying a bride to her husband’s residence in Gwarzo village, Ngaski Local Government Area, when the overloaded boat overturned mid-journey.
The vessel was reportedly carrying more than 100 passengers when it suddenly foundered, throwing occupants into the water.
Among the confirmed fatalities were 13 women and one child, plunging the community into deep mourning and renewing concerns over the safety of water transportation in rural areas.
Kebbi State Governor Nasir Idris expressed profound sorrow and extended condolences to the affected families, the Yauri Emirate, and the wider community.
Represented byYauri Local Government Chairman Abubakar Shu’aibu, the governor attended the funeral prayers held on Saturday.
During the address, the governor urged grieving families to remain strong and accept the tragedy with faith, stating that events occur according to divine will.
He also prayed for the forgiveness of the deceased and their peaceful rest in Jannatul Firdaus.
All victims have since been buried in accordance with Islamic rites, while the incident highlights ongoing safety concerns surrounding overcrowded boats and limited enforcement of water transport regulations in parts of Nigeria.
