Tragedy Strikes: Charlie Kirk Assassination Rocks Community, Memorial Rally Draws Crowd
The assassination of prominent conservative activist Charlie Kirk in Utah has sparked outrage and calls for unity against political violence across the United States, including a rally held in Bellmore, New York, on Saturday morning. Organized by members of the Bellmore Patriots, a pro-Donald Trump group, approximately 200 people gathered to condemn political violence and honor Kirk's legacy. Attendees, waving American flags and Trump banners, listened to patriotic music as passing cars on Sunrise Highway honked in support, with many expressing shock and viewing Kirk's death as an attack on free speech. Heather Liebman, a 35-year-old activist from Commack, emphasized that the issue transcended political affiliation, stating, "Right now, it's just about being American. A person was killed over free speech, and that's everyone's American right. That's not left or right."
Charlie Kirk, 31, was the founder of Turning Point USA, a nonprofit established in 2012 that played a significant role in mobilizing a conservative movement among young voters. His views, however, were often controversial, including his criticism of the Civil Rights Act and diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives, opposition to same-sex marriage, and skepticism regarding climate change. His death occurs amidst a period of heightened political division and escalating political violence, with comparisons drawn to other incidents, such as the killing of former Democratic state House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband, and the assassination attempt on former President Trump.
New York State Democratic Party Chairman Jay Jacobs condemned Kirk's assassination as "deplorable," stressing the American principle of believing in every individual's right to voice their opinion with passion, regardless of agreement or disagreement with their views. Anthony Falleo, 23, from Northport, who was present at the Bellmore memorial, highlighted Kirk's influence on his political path and hoped the event would serve as a unifying moment against all forms of political violence.
Authorities in Utah announced the arrest of Tyler Robinson, 22, as the alleged shooter. Robinson was apprehended on Friday after fatally shooting Kirk during an event at Utah Valley University on Wednesday. The investigation rapidly progressed due to incriminating text messages provided by Lance Twiggs, Robinson’s 22-year-old roommate. Twiggs, a wannabe professional gamer, lived with Robinson in a three-bedroom apartment in Saint George, Utah, and turned over evidence to law enforcement.
According to a law enforcement affidavit, Twiggs showed police texts from Robinson discussing stashing a gun linked to the shooting. Robinson’s messages to Twiggs, sent on the online chat network Discord, detailed a need to retrieve a rifle from a drop point, leaving the rifle in a bush, visually watching the area where it was left, and mentioning it being wrapped in a towel. Further messages referred to engraving bullets, a scope, the rifle being unique, and Robinson having changed outfits. These descriptions matched what police discovered: a Mauser .30-06 caliber rifle wrapped in a towel, abandoned near the Utah Valley University campus shortly after the shooting. While Twiggs was not named in the affidavit and is not accused of involvement in the crime, his cooperation was crucial.
Authorities have not yet confirmed a definitive motive for the killing. However, Utah Governor Spencer Cox told the Wall Street Journal that Robinson was "deeply indoctrinated with leftist ideology." Robinson, who was also taking electrician training, was known to be an avid gamer, much like Twiggs, and they were part of a larger group chat of gamer friends. Neighbors described Robinson and Twiggs as reclusive, with one noting Robinson's strange behavior shortly before the incident. Investigators collected evidence from the shared apartment on Friday, including a personal computer, as they continued to build their case. Robinson faces murder, obstruction, and felony firearm charges and is expected to make his first court appearance soon.
