Nigeria's 2027 Election Race Heats Up: Voter Register Soars Past 110 Million!
INEC has announced the states with the highest number of registered voters for the 2027 general elections, with Lagos, Kano, and Kaduna leading the list. The commission is intensifying preparations, including the upcoming PVC collection and emphasizing voter participation.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has released crucial updates regarding the national voters’ register, highlighting Lagos, Kano, and Kaduna states as having the highest number of registered voters ahead of the 2027 general elections. This announcement was made by INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, during a World Press Conference and National Stakeholders Meeting held on Tuesday in Abuja.
According to Prof. Amupitan, the national register of voters has expanded significantly, now reaching approximately 110 million registered individuals across Nigeria. Lagos State leads this impressive list with 7,488,633 registered voters. Following closely is Kano State, which accounts for 6,570,276 registered voters, and Kaduna State secures the third position with 4,662,640.
Beyond the top three, other states demonstrate substantial voter registration figures. Katsina State holds the fourth spot with 3,876,051 registered voters, while Rivers State follows with 3,736,434. Oyo State is next with 3,588,111 voters, and Delta State records 3,525,988. Benue State ranks eighth with 3,057,225 registered voters, with Ogun State closely behind at 3,037,981. Completing the top ten is Bauchi State, with 3,012,547 registered voters.
These figures underscore INEC's intensified preparations for the upcoming 2027 general elections. The commission is set to commence the nationwide collection of newly issued Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) starting Friday, October 9. This follows a comprehensive three-phase Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise, which successfully registered more than 10.6 million new applicants. Furthermore, INEC has completed the public display of the preliminary voters’ register for claims and objections, alongside the final Automated Biometric Identification System (ABIS) clean-up process to ensure accuracy and integrity of the data.
INEC has strongly urged all newly registered voters to collect their PVCs promptly and to meticulously verify that their details are accurately captured, emphasizing the critical role these cards play in exercising their civic rights. The electoral calendar for 2027 is already set, with the presidential and National Assembly elections scheduled for January 16, and the governorship and State Assembly elections slated for February 6. As these dates approach, the commission continues to highlight the paramount importance of broad voter participation and maintaining public confidence in the electoral process.
