A profound sense of national grief has enveloped Nigeria following the tragic crash of a Nigerian Air Force (NAF) ATR-42 aircraft in Ondo State. The incident occurred near a naval base in the Igbokoda area, involving an aircraft with tail number NGR 931 that was on a routine mission from Benin to Lagos. Air traffic controllers lost contact with the military aircraft at approximately 9:13 AM on Monday. Preliminary information indicates that a total of 32 individuals were on board, comprising 25 passengers and seven crew members. All attempts to establish radio contact with the aircraft proved unsuccessful, and its wreckage has since been located.
In response to this devastating loss, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu declared three days of national mourning for the Nigerian Air Force personnel who perished in the crash. As a mark of respect for the deceased officers, the President directed that national flags be flown at half-mast across the country. President Tinubu conveyed his deepest condolences to the families of all 32 individuals involved, to the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, and to all officers, airmen, and airwomen of the Nigerian Air Force. He described the incident as a deeply painful moment for the Armed Forces and for the entire nation, emphasizing that the sacrifices of Air Force personnel who put their lives on the line daily to secure Nigeria would never be forgotten.
President Tinubu was briefed on the incident by the Chief of Air Staff and immediately directed the Nigerian Air Force to commence a thorough investigation into the cause of the crash to prevent any future occurrences. He also commended the Air Force for swiftly activating an immediate search and rescue operation following the accident. The President assured the Nigerian Air Force of his administration's continued support as they persevere in their vital role of securing the nation, and further extended commendation to the swift response of first responders and the Ondo State Government at the crash site.
Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, also acknowledged the crash, confirming the loss of contact with the aircraft. He clarified that the regulation and control of military aircraft fall outside the authority of his ministry and the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority. Despite this, Minister Keyamo affirmed his commitment to cooperation and assistance with the ongoing search and rescue efforts, having spoken with Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke. Further information regarding the crash is expected to be released as the investigation and recovery operations continue, with the Nigerian Air Force expected to release the names of the deceased personnel after their families have been contacted.
