Tragedy in Canada: Police Identify Suspect in Deadly School Massacre, Shooter Named

A horrific school shooting rocked the remote community of Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia, on a Tuesday afternoon, claiming the lives of nine individuals, including the shooter. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) identified the perpetrator as 18-year-old Jesse Van Rootselaar, who was described as a woman and known socially by the name Jesse Strang. Authorities confirmed that Van Rootselaar, who began identifying as female six years prior at the age of 12, had a history of mental health challenges and had been the subject of multiple police call-outs to their home, some of which involved weapons.
The tragic events unfolded when Van Rootselaar opened fire in the library of Tumbler Ridge Secondary School, killing a female teacher and five students ranging in age from 12 to 17. Before the school massacre, Van Rootselaar had murdered their 39-year-old mother, Jennifer, and 11-year-old step-brother, Emmett, at their family home. The shooter then took their own life at the school. RCMP Deputy Commissioner Dwayne McDonald later revised the initial death toll, confirming nine lives were lost in total, including the shooter, and clarified that one victim initially believed to have succumbed to injuries had survived but remained in critical condition.
Among the injured was 12-year-old Maya Gebala, who was shot in the head and neck. Her mother, Cia Edmonds, shared the heartbreaking news that doctors initially warned Maya might not survive the night, calling for a miracle. At least two other individuals were hospitalized with serious or life-threatening wounds, and as many as 25 people received treatment for non-life-threatening injuries. Police responded swiftly to the scene, arriving within two minutes of the shooting and engaging with the shooter before discovering the victims and the shooter's body within the school.
The attack, which involved a long gun and a modified handgun, has been described as the second-deadliest school shooting in Canadian history. Tumbler Ridge, a picturesque mountain valley town of fewer than 2,500 residents, is known for its natural beauty and was considered an
