Tracker Showrunner Teases Deep Dive into Colter Shaw's Enigmatic Family Post-Cliffhanger
The midseason finale for Season 3 of CBS's 'Tracker', titled “Good Trouble,” plunges Colter Shaw (Justin Hartley) and his ally Keaton (Brent Sexton) into extreme peril, leaving viewers with a gripping cliffhanger. The episode sees Colter assisting Keaton, an individual for whom he holds both affinity and respect, with his former partner. This collaboration unexpectedly unearths a vast conspiracy involving corrupt police, mobsters, and a hired assassin, leading to a dangerous confrontation that leaves both Colter and Keaton stranded, bleeding, and with their lives hanging precariously in the balance. The resolution to their fate and the unfolding mystery will be revealed when the series returns with new episodes.
Showrunner Elwood Reid discussed the decision to end the midseason with such a dramatic cliffhanger, explaining that effective cliffhangers place lead characters in dire situations, creating anticipation for their eventual escape and the methods they employ. Reid emphasized that while Colter frequently encounters danger, these extreme moments, like his car crashing over a cliff, are crucial tools for engaging the audience. Viewers will immediately pick up from the crash in the next episode, which promises further spiraling chaos and revelations, particularly regarding the hitman's surprising motives and Colter's eventual success in saving someone in need.
The current case deeply impacts Keaton, providing an opportunity to delve into his backstory and strengthen his bond with Colter. Reid noted that Keaton’s character, initially brought in for a case deeply personal to Colter, resonated with the audience, prompting the writers to explore ways to integrate him more into the 'Tracker' universe. There were discussions about Keaton potentially joining Reenie as a private investigator, a possibility that hinges on his survival. This ongoing bond stems from intense previous episodes where Keaton assisted Colter in hunting down the person responsible for killing Colter's old girlfriend.
The series continues to expand its universe by bringing back recurring characters, such as Colter's brother Russell (Jensen Ackles) and other figures connected to his father's past. Reid expressed a strong desire to feature Jensen Ackles more frequently, despite scheduling challenges, highlighting the instant and dynamic chemistry between Hartley and Ackles, which adds a unique humor and tension to their interactions. Similarly, the intentional development of the physical interactions between Reenie and Randy, moving beyond mere phone calls, has enhanced the show's dynamic, also allowing for the introduction of characters like Mel to further populate the workspace.
The show's cases have evolved, becoming darker and more intense over time, a shift influenced by Justin Hartley's portrayal of Colter as a deeply emotional and committed character. Reid explained that while they explore complex, emotionally resonant stories—like reuniting a missing girl with her mother—they also balance these with lighter elements and humor, ensuring the series maintains a varied tone. Colter's skills are best utilized in situations with high stakes and sympathetic victims, as he excels when emotionally invested in helping others, viewing it as his personal therapy for a past he struggles to unravel.
Despite Colter's adeptness at solving external mysteries, his own family's past remains an unsolved enigma, a core driver for his character. This ongoing quest, where he consistently fails to crack his own history, forms a central working thesis of the show. Reid confirmed that Season 3 will progressively reveal more about what happened in Colter's childhood, providing answers that make him tick. Justin Hartley also had creative input, such as insisting Colter know how to hot-wire a tractor, further defining his character’s resourceful nature. Additionally, Italia Ricci’s character, introduced in episode seven, is also expected to make a return, as the writers designed her with potential for future appearances where she might call on Colter for assistance, acknowledging her skills despite her questionable nature.
