Track Star Noah Lyles Stunned by Major Awards Snub, Vows Huge 2026!
)
Noah Lyles, despite an outstanding 2025 season that solidified his status as a premier sprinter, has been notably overlooked for major national and world athletics awards, fueling his determination for future campaigns. The reigning Olympic 100m and world 200m champion demonstrated exceptional form throughout 2025, highlighted by clinching his fourth consecutive 200m world title in Tokyo. His dominant performance included winning the Diamond League 200m title with an undefeated streak, and at the world championships, he blazed to a gold medal in the 200m final with a time of 19.52 seconds, following a world-leading 19.51 seconds in the semifinals. Lyles concluded the year ranked as the world's number one in the 200m event, earning him nominations for both the World Athletics and USATF Male Track Athlete of the Year awards.
However, these nominations ultimately resulted in disappointment. The prestigious World Athlete of the Year title was awarded to Kenyan middle-distance runner Emmanuel Wanyonyi. More recently, Lyles was passed over for the 2025 USATF Jesse Owens Male Athlete of the Year award, which instead recognized hurdler Rai Benjamin. This marks the second consecutive year Lyles has missed out on the top domestic prize. A victory would have been historic for Lyles, who had previously won the Jesse Owens Award three times (2018, 2022, and 2023), as a fourth win would have surpassed track and field legend Michael Johnson's record.
Rai Benjamin's compelling case for the USATF award stemmed from his stellar 2025 season. In Tokyo, Benjamin secured his third straight World 400m hurdles title with an astonishing time of 46.52 seconds, one of the fastest ever recorded, despite an initial disqualification scare. He also played a crucial role by anchoring Team USA to a silver medal in the 4x400m relay and maintained domestic dominance by winning his sixth consecutive national title, remaining undefeated in the 2025 season.
Undeterred by these snubs, Lyles's focus has intensified on having a historic campaign in the coming years. He is scheduled to kick off his 2026 season at the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix on January 24, where he will compete in the 60m dash, an event where he set the meet record of 6.44 seconds in 2024. Looking further ahead, the American sprint star has set his sights on achieving a record-breaking fifth consecutive 200m World Championship title in 2027, a feat that would allow him to surpass Usain Bolt's four straight wins in the event. His renewed motivation is palpable as he also prepares for the upcoming World Indoor Athletics Championships in Poland next year. "Keep your head up and your eyes open," Lyles shared, hinting at his ambitious plans. "I think 2026 will be very big." With a renewed drive for a historic fifth world title and the ultimate goal of domination at the 2028 Olympics on home soil, Lyles is poised for another defining chapter in his remarkable career, steadfastly building his legacy in the sport.
