Tottenham's Catastrophic Freefall: Historic 6-Game Losing Streak Rocks Club!
Beleaguered Tottenham Hotspur manager Igor Tudor acknowledged that "everything is going wrong" after his team slumped to a sixth straight loss for the first time in its nearly 144-year history. A humiliating 5-2 defeat at Atlético Madrid in the first leg of the Champions League's round of 16 on Tuesday marked a new low in what has been a woeful season for Tottenham. The club now finds itself precariously positioned just one point above the relegation zone in the Premier League.
Tudor, who took over on February 14 as the replacement for the fired Thomas Frank, has presided over four consecutive losses, a grim milestone as no previous Spurs manager had lost his first four matches in charge. Reflecting on the team's current state, Tudor remarked, "We are very fragile, very weak." When pressed on the club's commitment to him, he added, "It's not about me. We need to stay calm. Less talking." He described the circumstances facing Tottenham as "very strange, very unusual" and "difficult to explain this."
Further compounding the club's woes, Tudor faced criticism for selecting Antonín Kinsky as goalkeeper for his Champions League debut. Kinsky's outing was short-lived and disastrous, as he was substituted in the 17th minute after making two mistakes that directly led to goals for Atlético Madrid. To make matters worse, late in the game, Cristian Romero, the team's captain, and João Palhinha clashed heads and both had to be withdrawn, leaving Tottenham with only nine players on the field. Romero, despite initially attempting to play on, eventually left, visibly shaken. Both players may now be forced to miss the crucial league trip to Liverpool on Sunday, where centre-back Micky van de Ven will also be unavailable due to suspension.
In response to the dire situation, the Tottenham Hotspur Supporters' Trust (THST) called for "emergency action" following the team's historically bad run and the coach's start. A statement from the THST declared, "Tonight's performance and result is a total disgrace. It's symptomatic of the abysmal state of things at Spurs right now." The Trust's criticism extended to various aspects, including "the January transfer window to the management appointments, the lack of leadership and the total absence of anyone with a Spurs pedigree informing these decisions." They emphatically questioned, "Where is the Daring to Do? Where are the Echoes of Glory?" The statement concluded with a stark warning: "Emergency action is needed as right now we are sleepwalking off the edge of a cliff. Being a Spurs fan has never been so difficult but supporters will not sit by and watch the club continue to decline."
