Transfer Battle Heats Up: Atletico Madrid Eyes Ademola Lookman as Fenerbahçe Scrambles
Fenerbahçe is reportedly making significant progress in its efforts to sign Nigerian forward Ademola Lookman, having reached a broad agreement with his current club, Atalanta. While a crucial breakthrough in negotiations has been achieved, several key details remain unresolved, leading to a late resurgence of interest from Spanish giants Atlético Madrid. The Turkish Super Lig side has verbally agreed to a deal valued at approximately €40 million for the 28-year-old attacker; however, the transfer is not yet finalized.
According to transfer insider Fabrizio Romano, the two clubs are still actively negotiating the intricate structure of the payment plan. Atalanta has yet to formally approve the specific terms proposed by Fenerbahçe regarding installments, financial guarantees, and the timing of payments. These crucial factors have introduced delays at the final stage of the transfer process, inadvertently creating an opening for other interested parties.
This delay has prompted renewed contact from Atlético Madrid, long-time admirers of Lookman. The La Liga club is understood to have recently reached out to gather details about the proposed deal, indicating their intent to assess the feasibility of making a late move. A potential switch to Spain could hold considerable appeal for Ademola Lookman, who has spent the majority of his career across England, Germany, and Italy, and might be tempted by the prospect of playing in La Liga.
However, sources close to Soccernet.ng suggest that Fenerbahçe is prepared to table a salary package that Atlético Madrid would find challenging to match. This financial advantage could prove to be the decisive factor if the transfer ultimately boils down to a direct choice between the two prominent clubs.
Fenerbahçe's determination to secure Lookman is driven by a critical winter push to reclaim the Super Lig title. The team, currently unbeaten after 19 league matches, boasts an impressive tally of 43 goals, matching fierce rivals Galatasaray. Despite their strong performance, Fenerbahçe currently trails the reigning champions by three points, with Galatasaray’s attack bolstered by the likes of Victor Osimhen, last season’s top scorer. The margins at the summit of the league remain incredibly fine.
Internally, Lookman is viewed as the pivotal attacking addition capable of transforming parity into a significant advantage, both domestically and in European competitions. His renowned pace, direct running style, and versatility across the front line are considered ideal attributes for a demanding title run-in where complacency cannot be afforded.
Furthermore, there is a distinct competitiveedge to Fenerbahçe's pursuit; Galatasaray had also been linked with Lookman last summer, and Fenerbahçe believes that securing the Nigeria international would not only bolster their own squad but also effectively deny their principal rivals a proven attacking option.
Lookman has been considered available on the market for several months, particularly after Atalanta blocked a potential summer exit following three strong seasons in Bergamo. That decision, however, has coincided with a comparatively quieter start to his current campaign, where he has recorded three goals and two assists in 19 appearances.
With his contract set to expire at the end of next season, Atalanta is increasingly aware of the imperative to act decisively, adding a layer of urgency to the ongoing talks as Fenerbahçe endeavors to clear the final hurdles of the transfer.
