Lookman Inspires Atlético's Historic 4-0 Demolition of Barcelona

Atlético Madrid achieved a sensational 4-0 victory over rivals Barcelona in the first leg of their Copa del Rey semi-final clash, played at the Metropolitano Stadium on Thursday night. This commanding win marked a historic occasion for the Madrid side, as it was only the third time ever, and the first in 37 years since 1989, that Atlético had beaten Barcelona by such a significant margin. Nigerian forward Ademola Lookman played a pivotal role in this emphatic triumph, contributing a goal and an assist.
The match saw Atlético get off to a blistering start, immediately putting pressure on the visitors. Just six minutes into the game, Barcelona defender Eric García inadvertently put the ball into his own net with an unfortunate back pass beyond his goalkeeper, Joan Garcia. This early setback visibly unsettled Barcelona, and Atlético capitalized on their disarray. In the 14th minute, a clever through ball from Nahuel Molina set up Antoine Griezmann, who expertly guided a precise finish into the bottom corner, doubling Atlético's lead and further electrifying the home crowd.
Atlético's relentless attacking continued. After narrowly missing a couple of other promising opportunities, their persistence paid off again in the 33rd minute. Following a sweeping team move down the right, Julián Álvarez slipped a pass across goal, allowing Ademola Lookman to arrive and smash an unstoppable first-time shot past the goalkeeper, making it 3-0. This goal was particularly significant for Lookman, marking his first home goal for Atlético Madrid, sending the fans into wild celebrations. Before the half-time whistle, the Nigerian star turned creator, bursting into space to tee up Julián Álvarez, whose powerful strike completed a devastating first-half performance and a perfect 4-0 lead for the hosts.
After the match, an elated Ademola Lookman expressed his happiness, not just for scoring but for the team's exceptional performance. "I’m very, very happy. Of course, scoring is good, but I think the team played really well tonight. In the box we were very professional, and today we showed a great level of teamwork," Lookman told Sporty TV. He also credited the amazing energy from the fans, acknowledging their crucial support. As an attacker, Lookman stated that scoring is always on his mind, always "looking to get into dangerous positions" and "to be in the right place at the right time." Lookman, who joined Atlético from Atalanta in the winter transfer window, has quickly made a strong impact, accumulating two goals and two assists in his first three games for the club.
The memorable night for Atlético was also highlighted by a classy post-match gesture from Antoine Griezmann. Following the victory, Griezmann presented signed jerseys to former Olympique Lyon and Barcelona defender Samuel Umtiti, who was in attendance. The gesture went viral on social media, with Griezmann not only gifting his own shirt with a dedication but also surprising Umtiti with Ademola Lookman's jersey, adding an emotional touch to the celebratory evening.
In the second half, Atlético Madrid, with their commanding lead, opted to control the tempo and protect their advantage. Barcelona briefly thought they had pulled a goal back in the 51st minute, but a lengthy VAR review ultimately ruled the effort out, compounding the visitors’ frustration. Atlético manager Diego Simeone soon made changes, withdrawing key players like Lookman, Griezmann, and Álvarez just after the hour mark, yet the team's grip on the match remained firm. They maintained a compact, disciplined, and composed defense, limiting Barcelona to mere half-chances. The evening worsened for the Catalans when Eric García was sent off in the 85th minute for a foul on Alex Baena, bringing a miserable evening to a fittingly sour conclusion.
With such a dominant first-leg cushion, Simeone’s men are now brimming with confidence heading into the return fixture. The second leg is scheduled for March 3 at Camp Nou, where Barcelona, under Hansi Flick, will face a monumental task to revive their Copa del Rey hopes, especially after winning the competition last season. Lookman, despite the big win, maintained a cautious outlook, stating, "Of course, it’s a big victory. But we have a few more games coming up before we play away, so we need to stay with the same mindset and focus on those matches, which will take us to the other semi final. We are excited about the days to come."
