Tinubu Stands Firm: Controversial New Tax Laws To Be Implemented January 1

The Federal Government of Nigeria, under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has unequivocally reaffirmed that the nation's new tax laws will fully commence on January 1, 2026, as originally scheduled. This stance comes despite significant public debate and calls for the suspension or delay of the reform process. In a series of statements issued by the Presidency, including one released on Tuesday, President Tinubu dismissed these calls, asserting that the tax reforms represent a "once-in-a-generation opportunity" to fundamentally rebuild Nigeria’s fiscal framework and strengthen the social contract between the government and its citizens. He specified that while some provisions of the new laws took effect on June 26, 2025, the remaining Acts are set to begin on the confirmed January 1, 2026 date.
President Tinubu stressed that the primary objective of these comprehensive reforms is not to increase taxes or burden citizens, but rather to deliver a structural reset to the entire tax system. He articulated that the reforms are designed to promote fairness, enhance harmonisation across different tax administrations, ensure competitiveness, and uphold the dignity of taxpayers. Furthermore, a key goal is to reinforce trust and responsibility between the government and the people. He explicitly stated, "The new tax laws are not intended to raise taxes. They are designed to reset the system structurally, promote harmonisation, protect dignity and strengthen the social contract."
Acknowledging the ongoing public discourse and concerns, particularly regarding alleged alterations to some provisions of the tax laws, President Tinubu maintained that no "substantial issue" had been established that would warrant a disruption, pause, or reversal of the reform agenda. He cautioned against "premature, reactive measures," emphasizing that trust in governance is painstakingly built through consistent, well-considered decisions and policies over time, rather than through hasty actions. He urged all stakeholders to shift their focus from debate to the crucial implementation phase, asserting that the reform programme has decisively moved into the delivery stage.
The President reiterated his administration’s unwavering commitment to due process and upholding the integrity of duly enacted legislation. He pledged close cooperation with the National Assembly to ensure the swift resolution of any genuine concerns or challenges that may arise during the implementation of the new tax laws. President Tinubu assured Nigerians that the Federal Government would continue to act solely in the overriding public interest, aiming to establish a robust tax system that effectively supports national prosperity, fosters shared responsibility, and ensures long-term economic stability for the country.
