'The Devil Wears Prada 2' Reigns Supreme: Box Office Ascent & Star Power Moves Shake Hollywood

Ahead of the release of The Devil Wears Prada 2, Meryl Streep successfully negotiated a significant increase in her salary compared to the figure offered for the first movie, recognizing her invaluable contribution to the project. The original film, released in 2006, was a significant box office success, grossing approximately $325 million worldwide against a budget of $40 million. Streep, an acclaimed actress with over 20 Oscar nominations, earned an upfront salary of $4 million for her role as Miranda Priestly in the original. The ensemble cast also featured Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt, and Stanley Tucci.
Two decades later, the cast reunited for the highly anticipated sequel, which boasts a reported budget of $100 million. A new report detailed the earnings of Streep, Hathaway, and Blunt for reprising their iconic roles. Streep's reputation and star power have only grown since the original film, solidifying Miranda Priestly's status as a cultural icon. Anne Hathaway went on to achieve an Oscar win, while Emily Blunt established herself as a notable star, even receiving an Oscar nomination for her supporting performance in Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer. Director David Frankel, returning for the sequel, confirmed that the majority of the $100 million budget had been allocated to the cast.
According to the new report, Meryl Streep commanded an upfront salary of $12.5 million for The Devil Wears Prada 2. However, she opted for a "favored nations" deal alongside Hathaway and Blunt, guaranteeing each of them a minimum of $12.5 million. While this figure is substantial, it is not Streep's highest payday; she reportedly earned more for the satirical Netflix comedy "Don't Look Up." The three leading actresses have the potential to earn as much as $20 million each through back-end revenue, reflecting the film's anticipated commercial success.
The film opened to positive critical reviews, achieving a "Certified Fresh" score of 78% on Rotten Tomatoes. The aggregator's consensus praised Meryl Streep's performance, stating, "Meryl Streep still wears Miranda Priestly like a finely-tailored suit in this sinfully enjoyable sequel, which is dressed to the nines in off-the-rack wish fulfillment and some trenchant observations about the state of modern media." By the end of its second weekend, The Devil Wears Prada 2 was projected to surpass the $450 million mark worldwide.
In an impressive debut at the South Korean box office, The Devil Wears Prada 2 clinched the No. 1 spot during the weekend of May 8–10. Data from KOBIS, the Korean Film Council's tracking service, revealed that the film generated $1.3 million from 195,513 admissions, securing a 28.08% revenue share and narrowly outperforming the previous week's leader. Since its South Korean debut on April 29, the film has accumulated a total gross of $8.2 million. Its strong performance positioned it above films like “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie,” “Salmokji : Whispering Water,” “Project Hail Mary,” and other local and international releases, demonstrating its global appeal and commercial success.
