AFCON 2027 Qualifiers Frenzy: Super Eagles Set for Crucial Nigeria-Madagascar Showdown!

The Super Eagles of Nigeria are poised for a critical start to their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign, as they prepare to face Madagascar on Friday in Uyo, followed by an encounter with Guinea-Bissau on Tuesday, September 29. The opening match against Madagascar, taking place at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, is seen as an opportunity for Nigeria to establish early control in Group L.

Super Eagles defender Emmanuel Fernandez, a Rangers star, has conveyed his expectations for a formidable challenge from Madagascar. He believes the Barea will exhibit significant resilience and energy, emphasizing that Nigeria must match this intensity to showcase their quality. “Look, I am expecting Madagascar to be a very strong team and I feel like they are going to have a lot of resilience and energy. That’s something we are going to need to match and show our quality through matching their energy,” Fernandez stated to Football Fans Tribe.

Adding to the excitement surrounding the upcoming fixture, new Super Eagles invitee George Ilenikhena is eager to make his debut. The 20-year-old Al-Ittihad striker received his maiden call-up from head coach Éric Chelle for these qualifiers. Speaking at a media parley in Uyo, Ilenikhena expressed immense pride in joining the national team, especially alongside established internationals. “It is an honour to be here. I am proud and happy to be part of this big national team, and for me, it’s a big deal,” he remarked, noting the excellent team spirit and his readiness to contribute. He affirmed, “I am very excited. I will give my best, like always. I will give my best when the coach puts me on the pitch and help the team in the best way I can.”

Head coach Éric Chelle and Prince Adeyinka Anthony Adeboye, the senior special adviser to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Grassroots Sports Development, have both stressed the importance of a strong start. Chelle aims for maximum points from the initial two fixtures, hoping to build an early cushion and avoid the pressures that plagued their unsuccessful 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign. “We have to show everyone from Day One that we want it, and the only way to do that is to go for it with our hearts and refuse to slow down at any point,” Chelle asserted. Notably, Madagascar secured a famous 2-0 victory over the Super Eagles at the 2019 AFCON in Egypt, although Nigeria had already qualified for the knockout stage then. Earlier, Nigeria had defeated Madagascar 2-0 in Calabar during the 2012 AFCON qualifying campaign and repeated the scoreline in Antananarivo the following year.

The match will be officiated by Chadian referee Alhadji Allaou Mahamat, appointed by the Confederation of African Football. The 40-year-old is an experienced CAF match official, having handled fixtures in the CAF Champions League, CAF Confederation Cup, Africa U-20 Cup of Nations, and the African Nations Championship. Mahamat is familiar with the Super Eagles, having previously refereed two of Nigeria’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, including a 1-0 home victory against Rwanda and a 2-1 away win against Lesotho in South Africa.

Coach Chelle has a strong squad at his disposal for the Madagascar clash. Ola Aina and Benjamin Fredricks are back in contention, and Taiwo Awoniyi has been drafted in following Victor Osimhen’s injury withdrawal.
