Taylor Swift Endorses Thriller Series, Amasses 25 Million Viewers and Dominates Streaming

In a recent candid interview, music sensation Taylor Swift has been openly discussing various aspects of her life, from her engagement to Travis Kelce and the inspirations behind her hit songs, to her current favorite television series. During an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Swift enthusiastically named two shows she's currently engrossed in: "The Gilded Age" and an "Office" spinoff titled "The Paper." She also highlighted another captivating series, "The Girlfriend," which she described as "a good one." This single mention has shone a spotlight on "The Girlfriend," a Prime Video record-breaker, and a show that has garnered significant attention since its release.
"The Girlfriend," starring Olivia Cooke, known for her role in "House of the Dragon," delves into a fraught family dynamic from its very first episode. The series begins as Cherry (Cooke), a confident and independent young woman, is introduced to her boyfriend Daniel's (Laurie Davidson) mother, Laura (Robin Wright). Unfortunately for Daniel, a palpable tension arises between the two women immediately. Cherry's sharp wit and public displays of affection with Daniel are met with Laura's disapproval and discomfort, establishing Laura's fiercely protective nature from the outset. Cherry, in turn, is unafraid to assert her presence and mark her territory, setting the stage for an intense conflict.
As the six-episode series progresses, the narrative skillfully alternates between Cherry and Laura's perspectives, painting a complex and often unsettling picture of both characters. Cherry is portrayed as potentially suspicious, with hints of manipulative intentions towards Daniel's wealth and a violent past that threatens to unravel her relationship. Laura's increasing discoveries about Cherry fuel her fears for her son's well-being and even her own life, leading her to take drastic measures. These range from attempts to expose Cherry to Daniel to considering ways to remove Cherry from his life entirely. Conversely, Laura herself is depicted as an intensely overprotective mother, willing to go to extreme lengths, even if it means breaking her son's heart, to 'protect' him. Ultimately, both Laura and Cherry emerge as toxic and untrustworthy figures, bound by a deep-seated disdain and distrust that seems beyond reconciliation. Their escalating plots against each other force Daniel into an agonizing choice, realizing that only one woman can remain in his life, leaving him to grapple with whom to believe and trust.
Beyond its compelling plot, "The Girlfriend" boasts a talented cast, including Waleed Zuaiter, Karen Henthorn, Tanya Moodie, and Shalom Brune-Franklin. Robin Wright not only stars as Laura but also served as a producer and director for the series, alongside Andrea Harkin, contributing to its innovative storytelling and gripping performances.
The series, which premiered on September 10 on Prime Video, has quickly become a resounding success. According to Deadline, "The Girlfriend" has already captivated over 25 million viewers globally and achieved the distinction of being the number-one new scripted series on Prime Video in the UK. Even a month after its debut, the show, which famously concludes with a major jaw-dropping cliffhanger, continues to rank among the top four titles on Prime Video in the U.S., trailing only "Gen V," "The Summer I Turned Pretty," and "The Terminal List: Dark Wolf." With its combination of unreliable narrators, a plot brimming with twists and turns, and powerful acting from lead stars Olivia Cooke and Robin Wright, the series provides all the ingredients for an enthralling television binge. While a second season has not yet been officially confirmed, a public endorsement from a global icon like Taylor Swift could significantly boost its prospects for renewal.
