Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce recently addressed the viral moment from the NBA Eastern Conference Finals where he was seen chugging a beer courtside with global superstar Taylor Swift. Speaking on the Wednesday (May 27) episode of his "New Heights" podcast, Kelce defended his actions after some public "grumbling" about the display, particularly from those who deemed it "immature" or "frat boyish."
The incident occurred during the New York Knicks vs. Cleveland Cavaliers game on May 23 at Cleveland’s Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse. While recapping the event with cohost and brother Jason Kelce, who light-heartedly teased him about being a "bad role model" for downing a brew on the jumbotron, Travis offered a spirited defense of his "classy chug." He emphasized, "Didn’t spill one drop. Didn’t crush the can. I’m on the hardwood floor at an NBA game, it could’ve got messy. It was a smooth, classy chug to get the people going. We’re down f—king 10 points, trying to get some type of energy going in the building." Clips of Kelce standing up and expertly finishing a can of Garage Beer as Swift watched and giggled quickly spread across social media, garnering mixed reactions from fans.
Beyond the beer chug, Travis also shared insights into his date night with Swift. Despite his home team, the Cavaliers, losing 121-108 to the Knicks, he confirmed that he and Swift thoroughly enjoyed their time. He highlighted the personal significance of the visit, stating, "Getting Tay back to Cleveland and showing her my roots is always something I love doing." Kelce clarified that his intention wasn't to convert Swift into a Cleveland sports fan but rather to share a "fun date night" and immerse her in the "sports world that I appreciate." He noted that they had previously attempted to attend a game in New York but he was unable to make it.
Addressing another circulating photo that appeared to show him sleeping during the fourth quarter, Travis humorously explained that he was merely closing his eyes and slumping in his chair out of "defeat." He recounted the Knicks' unstoppable performance, laughing, "The Knicks f—king couldn’t miss a goddamn shot in the fourth quarter. I’m just sitting there like, ‘Come on.’"
Finally, Kelce responded to Knicks fans who playfully taunted him with old photos of Taylor Swift wearing New York team merchandise. He acknowledged Swift's strong "New York ties" and her past affiliation with the team, stating, "Not a lot of teams have been able to get Taylor to wear a jersey, I’ll say that. The Knicks did. It’s hilarious." He also revealed Swift’s reaction to the game matchup: "When it came down to going to the Cav’s game, she was kind of like, ‘Nice, they’re playing the Knicks. Sweet, I’ve seen them play before.’"
