Oyo Pupils' Ordeal Ends: Military Recovers Abducted Students, Terrorists Apprehended

The Nigerian Defence Headquarters (DHQ) successfully executed a multi-agency operation, leading to the rescue of students and teachers abducted from schools in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State. This significant achievement, which concluded on July 10, 2026, brought an end to an ordeal that began on May 15, 2026, when the victims were taken captive. The operation was described as intelligence-driven, meticulously planned, and executed to ensure the safe return of the hostages.

The extensive rescue mission involved a broad coalition of Nigeria’s security apparatus. Troops from the Nigerian Army, under the command of Major General CR Nnebeife, General Officer Commanding 2 Division, Nigerian Army, Ibadan, spearheaded the efforts. They collaborated closely with specialized units from the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), particularly the National Counter Terrorism Center (NCTC), the Defence Headquarters, and Special Forces drawn from the Nigerian Army, Navy, and Air Force. Additional crucial support was provided by the Nigeria Police, the Department of State Services (DSS), the National Intelligence Agency (NIA), the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, alongside local security organizations including vigilantes, hunters, and Amotekun.

These coordinated efforts focused intensely on identifying the terrorist kingpins responsible for the kidnapping, systematically dismantling their extensive networks, disrupting their logistical connections, and eradicating their hideouts. The primary area of concentration for these operations was within the vast Old Oyo National Park Forest. The strategy proved effective, as numerous arrests were made across Oyo State and in various other locations nationwide. This disruption applied immense pressure on the terrorist group, ultimately compelling them to release the pupils and teachers unconditionally. Presidential media aide, Bayo Onanuga, confirmed that eight kidnappers were apprehended and are currently in DSS custody, while some others were neutralized during the rescue operation. Importantly, no concessions were made to the terrorists; the kingpin whose release was demanded by the kidnappers remains under prosecution for his atrocities.

While the operation achieved its primary objective of safely recovering the hostages, the DHQ statement acknowledged that there were some casualties among the security forces, underscoring the inherent dangers and sacrifices made during such complex missions. Initial reports indicated 44 pupils and teachers were rescued, with subsequent details clarifying the rescue of 39 pupils and seven teachers, including the school principal, Mrs. Alamu Folawe. Tragically, one teacher had been beheaded shortly after the initial attack, adding to the fears for the remaining captives.

Following their rescue, the students and teachers are currently receiving medical attention and rehabilitation at an undisclosed hospital. Oyo State Governor, ‘Seyi Makinde, visited the victims at the 2 Division Nigerian Army Hospital, Odogbo, Ibadan, expressing satisfaction with their stable condition and positive response to treatment. Governor Makinde outlined plans for family members to meet the released individuals as a critical part of the post-traumatic recovery process, with a formal handover to the Oyo State Government anticipated in due course to facilitate their reunion with families.

The successful rescue operation garnered widespread praise and relief across Nigeria. The Arewa Youth Assembly (AYA) lauded the security agencies for their courage, specifically commending the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, and the Director General of the DSS, Mr. Ajayi Oluwatosin, for their pivotal roles in intelligence supply and coordination. Praises were also heaped upon the Service Chiefs for their leadership and operational discipline, and on the gallant troops who risked their lives. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu received commendations from various quarters, including the Ondo South APC Senatorial Candidate Barr. Isaacs Kekemeke and the Ooni of Ife, for providing the necessary enabling environment and political will that ensured the operation's success. Governor Makinde also appreciated the professionalism and coordinated efforts of the Nigerian Army and other security agencies, while urging citizens to unite against security challenges rather than fostering division.

In the aftermath of the rescue, calls were renewed for all Nigerians to maintain vigilance and continue providing credible information to security operatives. Emphasizing that citizen cooperation remains the most critical link in the early warning chain, stakeholders stressed that every piece of intelligence, no matter how small, contributes significantly to national security. Such collective efforts are deemed essential to ensure that criminal elements find no breathing space anywhere in Nigeria and that future heroic feats of rescue can be repeated.
