Super Eagles Thriller: Arokodare Secures Narrow Win Against Rwanda, Fans React!

Nigeria's Super Eagles secured a crucial 1-0 victory over Rwanda in their 2026 World Cup qualifier encounter on Saturday at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium. The win, powered by a second-half goal from substitute Tolu Arokodare, significantly revived Nigeria’s hopes for World Cup qualification, marking their first win in six matches.
The build-up to the match saw head coach Eric Chelle make a surprising tactical decision by benching captain William Troost-Ekong, who was the first player to arrive at camp. Twenty-year-old Benjamin Fredrick, making only his second national team appearance, stepped in to partner Calvin Bassey in central defence. Midfielder Wilfred Ndidi was appointed as the stand-in captain for the crucial tie. The initial attacking lineup featured Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman, and Moses Simon, while Stanley Nwabali started in goal despite a recent injury scare. Frank Onyeka, Alex Iwobi, and Ndidi anchored the midfield.
Nigeria started brightly, with Victor Osimhen having an eighth-minute goal ruled out for offside, a decision replays later suggested was incorrect in the absence of VAR. The Super Eagles continued to press, with Simon and Iwobi creating chances and testing Rwanda's goalkeeper, Fiacre Ntwari. However, a major setback occurred in the 36th minute when Osimhen succumbed to an injury and was replaced by Cyril Dessers. The first half concluded goalless, despite Nigeria's efforts and Nwabali receiving a booking for a scuffle.
The second half saw a tactical switch, with Tolu Arokodare introduced. The towering striker made an immediate impact, blasting the ball into the net from a yard out in the 51st minute to give Nigeria a 1-0 lead. Ntwari continued to be busy, making a double save to deny Simon and Lookman minutes later as the Eagles sought to extend their lead. Despite late threats from the visitors, the Super Eagles remained resolute, holding on to claim all three points.
The victory propelled Nigeria to third position in Group A with 10 points from seven matches, placing them one point behind second-placed Benin Republic, who had beaten Zimbabwe 1-0. However, Nigeria still trails significantly behind the group leaders, South Africa, by six points. South Africa had earlier hammered Lesotho 3-0. The Super Eagles now face another must-win match against South Africa in Bloemfontein on September 9, a fixture that will be critical for their qualification aspirations.
Reactions to the match were varied. While the win was celebrated for keeping qualification hopes alive, some Nigerian football fans expressed displeasure over the team's performance, particularly the narrow 1-0 scoreline against Rwanda. Comments on social media platforms like X reflected desires for more goals and concerns about the team's readiness for tougher opponents like South Africa. Former Super Eagles coach Samson Siasia voiced his unhappiness with Coach Chelle's decision to bench William Troost-Ekong, citing the captain's experience and leadership. Conversely, former striker Victor Ikpeba supported Chelle's lineup, stating he observed positive energy in training sessions and that Ekong would contribute behind the scenes as a leader.
