)
The Super Eagles of Nigeria have ignited a wave of optimism and confidence among their supporters after securing a dominant 3-1 victory over Uganda’s Cranes in their final Group C match of the AFCON 2025 qualifiers. This win ensured Nigeria finished the group stage with a perfect record, collecting nine points from a possible nine, a feat that has many Nigerians on social media declaring their team is ready to challenge for continental glory.
Coach Eric Chelle opted for significant squad rotation, making eight changes from the previous lineup, yet the Super Eagles maintained control and overwhelmed their East African opponents. The scoring was opened in the first half by Paul Onuachu, who converted a cutback from Fisayo Dele-Bashiru, after an earlier attempt was denied by veteran goalkeeper Denis Onyango.
Uganda's situation worsened after halftime when substitute goalkeeper Salim Magoola was red-carded for handling the ball outside the penalty area following a Victor Osimhen shot. With Uganda forced to deploy their third goalkeeper, Nigeria's pressure intensified. Raphael Onyedika then sealed the victory with two quick-fire goals, both assisted by Samuel Chukwueze, extending Nigeria's lead to 3-0. Uganda managed a late consolation goal through an exquisite chip from Rogers Mato, but the 3-1 defeat left them at the bottom of the group, while Nigeria advanced to the knockout stages with significant momentum and showcased impressive squad depth.
Individual performances were a major talking point. Raphael Onyedika emerged as the standout player and Man of the Match. Long-awaited by fans, the Club Brugge midfielder finally got his chance and delivered brilliantly. His touches were exquisite, and he displayed exceptional comfort on the ball, knowing when to drop deep and maintaining an impressive 97% pass accuracy in the opposition half and 98% in his own. His two goals in the second half, assisted by Samuel Chukwueze, further solidified his case for more playing time in the tournament.
Fisayo Dele-Bashiru also shone in an advanced midfield role, a position many believe suits him best. The Lazio midfielder was central to almost all of Nigeria’s attacks, making brilliant runs that opened up space for strikers and ultimately assisting Onuachu’s opener.
