Super Eagles Face Fiery Congo Showdown! Experts Weigh In on Mega Clash
)
The Super Eagles of Nigeria are set to face the Democratic Republic of Congo in a crucial World Cup playoff final this Sunday in Rabat, with the winner securing the continent's sole spot in the intercontinental playoff for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. This decisive clash is generating significant attention, with former Benin coach Gernot Rohr and Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong offering their insights.
Gernot Rohr, while tipping Nigeria as the favorite, has issued a caution regarding the Leopards of DR Congo. He believes Nigeria's overall collective quality should see them through, but highlighted specific dangers posed by the Congolese side. "Of course, Nigeria is the favourite, but they must be careful," Rohr stated, according to The Nation. He emphasized Congo's physically strong team and their proficiency on set pieces, a strength they demonstrated against Cameroon. Despite his warning about Congo's physical and mental strength, the German tactician expressed confidence in Nigeria's collective ability, anticipating an interesting game where he expects Nigeria to prevail due to their superior collective qualities. Nigeria enters this clash in fine form, having won five of their last six games, fostering optimism for continued success.
Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong echoed the sentiment of a formidable challenge, acknowledging that the match against Sébastien Desabre's determined Congolese side will be a difficult one. Nigeria secured their place in the final with a convincing 4-1 semi-final victory over Gabon, while DR Congo pulled off a surprise 1-0 win against Cameroon. Troost-Ekong stressed the necessity for Nigeria to be at their absolute best. "The boys are happy to be here, to be competing on Sunday. There is no other motivation needed. We all want to go to the World Cup," he told the Super Eagles media team. He added that Congo also performed well to reach the final. The veteran centre-back noted that each game presents unique obstacles, and the Leopards will offer a different kind of test compared to previous opponents. "Every game brings a new challenge. Against Gabon, it was difficult. They were dangerous on the counter-attack, which we dealt with," he explained. He further stated, "Congo, I know one or two players in their team. I know that they are a good side. It’s going to be a different challenge entirely. I don’t think we can compare them to other teams in Africa, but we have to adapt."
The stakes are incredibly high, as the victor of Sunday's encounter will advance to the intercontinental playoffs, keeping their dreams of participating in the 2026 FIFA World Cup alive.
