Streaming Giant Showmax Shutting Down, Content Migrates to DStv Stream

Showmax, a prominent streaming service, has officially announced the specific dates for its complete shutdown. Subscribers were informed via email that March 31, 2026, marks the final day for renewing subscriptions or redeeming vouchers. Following this, all new subscriptions and renewals will cease on April 1, 2026. Existing subscribers retain the ability to watch content until their current subscription expires, or until the end of April 2026, whichever comes first.

This decisive action follows MultiChoice’s strategic decision to terminate the service after years of persistent financial struggles and substantial losses. The final closure decision was solidified after Canal+, which completed its acquisition of MultiChoice in September 2025, deemed Showmax’s financial performance unsatisfactory. Prioritizing profitability, the French company opted to cease funding the unprofitable streaming service.

The financial woes of Showmax were significant, with the platform accumulating approximately $428.9 million in losses during the three years leading up to the Canal+ takeover. In 2025 alone, trading losses widened dramatically by 88% to $297 million, while revenue plummeted to $48.5 million, falling far short of its ambitious $1 billion annual revenue target.

Despite the shutdown of the standalone service, Showmax content, including its popular Originals and exclusive programming, will not disappear entirely. The company has confirmed plans to migrate its offerings to DStv Stream, MultiChoice’s existing streaming platform primarily serving satellite TV subscribers. Details on how users can continue to access this content within the DStv ecosystem are expected to be released soon, ensuring a new home for beloved Showmax productions.

Showmax faced an uphill battle against intense competition in the streaming landscape, battling giants like Netflix, YouTube, and rapidly growing short-video platforms such as TikTok. The service also struggled to capture the preferences for affordability among African audiences. Even a substantial investment in new technology from NBCUniversal’s Peacock in early 2024 failed to propel the platform to its expected profitability targets.

The April 2026 shutdown signals the end of Showmax as a distinct pay-to-view streaming service in Africa. This move follows its earlier strategic exit from all international markets in December 2023, consolidating its focus before the ultimate decision to integrate its content into DStv Stream.
