Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Shakes Up Formula for Season 5 in Exclusive Reveal

The penultimate season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds concluded with an epic, time-bending finale titled "Tomorrow's Enterprise," which saw Lt. Uhura (Celia Gooding) team up with a future version of herself to prevent Scotty (Martin Quinn) from an untimely death. This episode also offered a glimpse into James T. Kirk's (Paul Wesley) earliest days as Captain of the USS Enterprise, setting the stage for the series' endgame that is expected to bring the timeline full circle to The Original Series. Showrunners Henry Alonso Myers and Akiva Goldsman discussed this pivotal finale and the future of the series, emphasizing its core theme of found family fighting for a hope-filled future.

Myers explained that the decision to explore the dynamic between Uhura and Scotty, a relationship only offhandedly mentioned in the films, stemmed from the desire to delve into implied emotional depths. He noted that the show thrives on giving characters more to play that wasn't fully explored in the original series, and the interesting chemistry between Uhura and Scotty provided a strong emotional core for the finale's time-travel adjustments. This allowed them to dig into and reveal this relationship more specifically.

Looking ahead, Myers and Goldsman confirmed significant changes for the show's fifth and final season, expected to air in 2027 after the second season of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy. The final six episodes will largely abandon the show's signature genre-hopping premise to focus on delivering a fitting send-off for the crew of the USS Enterprise. Goldsman clarified that while the show will remain episodic, there will be no more genre-hopping in terms of core narrative, instead offering a 'suite of episodes' dedicated to saying goodbyes to beloved characters.

The showrunners also teased further exploration of the relationship between Kirk and La'an (Christina Chong), promising surprises and emotion to come. Additionally, they revealed that Thomas Jane and Kai Murakami have been cast as the new Bones and Sulu, respectively, expressing confidence that these actors genuinely embody their characters. Regarding the Season 4 finale's alternate future, Goldsman clarified it as an "interstitial future" that exists in continuity, with the primary change being Scotty's survival thanks to Uhura's intervention. Myers also highlighted the "space babies" mystery in the finale, explaining it was a creative decision to constantly surprise the audience and deliver unexpected plot twists.

Reflecting on their journey, Goldsman expressed one regret: not being able to get William Shatner on the show, though he otherwise felt fulfilled. Myers added that getting to do five seasons of a show and crafting its actual ending is a significant achievement in television production. When asked for advice for Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley, who are working on bringing the Star Trek franchise back to the big screen, both showrunners emphasized the importance of a genuine love for Star Trek and allowing imagination to be the limit.
