Nasiru Marafa, the Bursar of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), has been shot dead in Zamfara State. The university confirmed his death in a statement issued on Sunday by its Registrar and Secretary to Council, Oladipo Ajayi, stating that Marafa was reportedly shot on September 6 while returning from Gusau.

Marafa, also identified as Mallam Nasiru Gusau Marafa, had served as NOUN’s Bursar since his appointment in September 2022 after holding several positions within the university.

His death has prompted mourning across the NOUN community, with the university extending condolences to his family, relatives, friends and colleagues. NOUN also announced a Janaza Ga’ib, or funeral prayer in absentia, in his honour following the 1:30 p.m. Zuhr prayer on Monday, September 7.

The prayer was scheduled to take place at the university’s Jumaat Mosque in Jabi, Abuja, with members of the university community, family, friends and well-wishers invited to attend.

Former Bauchi State Governor and Chairman of the NOUN Governing Council, Isa Yuguda, was expected to attend the prayer alongside Vice-Chancellor Oji Uduma. The university described Marafa’s death as a significant loss to its staff, students and wider community. The circumstances surrounding the reported shooting were not detailed in the statement confirming his death.
