Shock Exit: 'Twisters' Director Lee Isaac Chung Abandons Margot Robbie's 'Ocean's' Prequel Over Creative Rift!

Director Lee Isaac Chung has officially exited the highly anticipated “Ocean’s 11” prequel, a project starring Margot Robbie and Bradley Cooper. The departure is attributed to “creative differences,” making Chung the second filmmaker to step away from the project after Jay Roach was initially hired to direct. Chung is widely recognized for his work on films such as “Twisters” and the critically acclaimed, Oscar-nominated “Minari,” indicating a significant creative vision that diverged from the project's direction.
Margot Robbie’s production company, LuckyChap, is producing the film for Warner Bros. Both entities released statements regarding Chung's departure. A Warner Bros. spokesperson confirmed the amicable split, stating, “This is an amicable split due to creative differences.” Following this, Warner Bros. and LuckyChap issued a joint statement, praising Chung as a “singular filmmaking talent whose vision and partnership have been invaluable to Warner Bros. and LuckyChap throughout this journey.” They further expressed a strong desire to “collaborate on future projects together,” underscoring the friendly nature of the separation despite the creative divergence.
Carrie Solomon is currently developing the screenplay for the prequel. Early reports suggest the film will be set in 1960s Europe. While precise plot details are yet to be confirmed, the narrative is expected to unfold before the events of Steven Soderbergh’s immensely successful 2001 heist comedy, “Ocean’s Eleven.” That film famously featured an ensemble cast including George Clooney, Matt Damon, Brad Pitt, and Julia Roberts, portraying con artists orchestrating a elaborate casino heist in Las Vegas.
The “Ocean’s” franchise has a storied history, having inspired two direct sequels to Soderbergh’s film, as well as the female-led “Ocean’s Eight” reboot, which starred Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, and Rihanna. All these modern iterations draw their lineage from the original 1960 “Ocean’s 11,” which notably featured five members of Frank Sinatra’s iconic Rat Pack. The upcoming prequel aims to delve deeper into this rich cinematic universe's origins.
The broader landscape of Warner Bros. productions, including the “Ocean’s 11” prequel, faces a degree of uncertainty due to the pending sale of Warner Bros. to Paramount Skydance. However, Paramount’s CEO, David Ellison, has made a public commitment to release 30 films annually once the merger of the two media giants is complete. This pledge indicates a significant future demand for new content to populate their theatrical slates, suggesting that high-profile projects like the “Ocean’s 11” prequel are likely to proceed despite the corporate restructuring and executive changes, albeit potentially with new creative leadership.
