AI Disruptor Empirik Secures $21M, Promises to Predict Outages Before Disaster Strikes!
Empirik, an AI-powered observability tool, has spun out as an independent company with $21 million in seed funding. Conceived at Sequoia Capital, Empirik proactively predicts and prevents tech outages by tracking system changes, aiming to automate infrastructure engineering tasks for DevOps and SRE teams.
Empirik, an innovative AI-powered observability tool, officially spun out as an independent company following a significant $21 million seed funding round led by Sequoia, Canapi, and Alumni Ventures. The concept for Empirik originated at Sequoia Capital in 2020, where Avon Puri, then chief digital and information officer, collaborated with fellow IT leader Sudheer Dhurjati. Leveraging their extensive experience from running infrastructure at Rubrik and VMware for over a decade, Puri and Dhurjati recognized the transformative potential of large language models to autonomously address a critical challenge for infrastructure engineers: preventing tech outages before they occur.
The founders' insight was to shift from reactive system failure resolution to proactive prediction. They envisioned and built Empirik as a tool capable of meticulously tracking system changes and inferring their potential ripple effects across an entire infrastructure, thereby enabling the prevention and resolution of incidents. Sequoia Capital, recognizing the groundbreaking nature of this approach, incubated the startup in 2023. Earlier this year, they further strengthened Empirik's leadership by recruiting Kartik Chandrayana, formerly CPO at Quantum Metric and VP of observability at Salesforce, as its CEO.
Sequoia partner Bogomil Balkansky emphasized the long-standing financial investment in maintaining system uptime, noting that many existing observability tools often fail to grasp complex system dependencies. He asserted that Empirik stands out as one of the first dedicated solutions focused on meticulously tracking changes across vast and intricate environments. Empirik operates as an autonomous "traffic cop," intelligently permitting low-risk changes, establishing crucial guardrails for larger modifications, and flagging the most potentially dangerous updates for human review and intervention.
By automating routine troubleshooting tasks, Empirik empowers busy DevOps and site reliability engineering (SRE) teams to offload lower-value activities and instead concentrate their efforts on higher-value priorities. Since its launch earlier this year, Empirik has rapidly garnered a diverse customer base, ranging from burgeoning startups to established Fortune 500 enterprises, including S&P Global, Guardant Health, and a prominent consumer packaged goods (CPG) company.
Kartik Chandrayana articulated Empirik's ambitious goal: to replicate the success of tools like Cursor and Claude Code for software developers by automating specific tasks for infrastructure engineers, thereby significantly accelerating their workflow. He highlighted the escalating importance of tools that help infrastructure engineers manage constant system changes, especially as AI continues to accelerate the pace of software development. As Chandrayana succinctly put it, "What agentic AI did for software, Empirik wants to do for infrastructure engineering."
Regarding the competitive landscape, Balkansky maintains that Empirik currently occupies a unique category. He clarified that rather than competing directly, Empirik serves as a complementary layer to existing AI SRE platforms such as Resolve and Sequoia-backed Traversal, enhancing the overall efficacy of infrastructure management solutions.
