SGA's Home Targeted: Police Probe Break-In at Star Player's Residence

Oklahoma City police are investigating a burglary reported at the home of NBA star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, which occurred on a Thursday evening while the reigning MVP was playing a game. Officers responded to the incident around 7:45 p.m. at a residence in Nichols Hills, an affluent area north of downtown Oklahoma City. Police stated that the suspects had fled the scene prior to their arrival and, while no arrests have been made, there is no immediate threat to public safety.
This incident mirrors a concerning trend of burglaries targeting the homes of prominent professional athletes across the United States in recent months. Thieves are believed to specifically target these individuals due to the high-value items expected to be found in their residences. Other high-profile athletes whose homes have been victimized include the NFL's Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce, and Joe Burrow, the NBA's Luka Doncic, and the NHL's Evgeni Malkin.
Law enforcement officials have previously issued warnings to sports leagues, highlighting that these criminals often strike on game days, knowing that players will be away from home. A common method involves smashing through rear windows to gain entry. In response to this escalating issue, the NBA circulated a memo to its teams in November 2024, emphasizing the critical importance of home security vigilance.
The league's recommendations for players to enhance their home protection include several key measures. Players are advised to install and consistently utilize updated alarm systems equipped with cameras whenever they leave their homes. Additionally, they should keep all valuables stored in locked and secured safes. The NBA also suggested removing online real estate listings that may display interior photographs of their residences, utilizing professional protective guard services during extended periods away from home, and even considering the use of dogs for additional home protection.
