Scream 7 Trailer Sparks Outrage & Homage Amidst Boycott Calls

The highly anticipated debut trailer for Scream 7 has recently been unveiled, captivating fans with a poignant homage to a beloved character from the franchise's inception. The original 1996 slasher parody famously introduced audiences to Neve Campbell's iconic character, Sydney Prescott, whose high school life was plagued by the terrifying masked killer, Ghostface. The identity of the first Ghostface was eventually revealed to be Sydney's partner, Billy Loomis, portrayed by Skeet Ulrich, alongside his deranged accomplice, Stu Macher, played by Matthew Lillard. Among their initial victims was Sydney's closest friend, Tatum Riley, embodied by Rose McGowan, who met a gruesome demise when crushed by a garage door.
Three decades after the original film's cinematic release, a new incarnation of Ghostface has emerged, once again targeting Sydney Prescott and reporter Gale Weathers, played by Courteney Cox. A significant revelation from the fresh Scream 7 trailer is that Ghostface is now pursuing Sydney's daughter, a character portrayed by Isabel May. In a heartwarming tribute, Sydney has named her daughter Tatum, directly honoring McGowan's character from the inaugural film. This emotional nod was immediately recognized by devoted Scream enthusiasts, who flocked to social media platforms like X to express their delight and highlight the tribute. Comments such as "Sydney named her daughter after Tatum!!!! The writers paying homage to Rose McGowan's character did something to my nostalgia heart," and "The scream 7 trailer.. the nostalgia got me bro. sidney named her kid tatum. TATUM," flooded online discussions, indicating the strong positive reception to this particular detail.
Despite the praise for the new trailer and its nostalgic elements, Scream 7 has unfortunately found itself at the center of significant controversy. Melissa Barrera, who starred as a leading character in the two preceding sequels, was controversially dismissed from the franchise following comments she made regarding the Israel-Hamas war. In what some observers have interpreted as an act of solidarity, her co-star Jenna Ortega also quietly exited the project. This turn of events has prompted a backlash from a segment of the fanbase, with some fans threatening to boycott the new Scream film in support of Barrera's stance. One X user, echoing the sentiment of many, posted: "as a lifelong fan of the scream franchise, i can never support them again after what they did to melissa barrera. She was one of the first people in hollywood to speak up against the genocide and the producers of this film tried to ruin her for it. Boycott."
Fans eager to witness the next chapter of the Ghostface saga, both for its nostalgic tributes and to see how the controversy impacts its reception, can mark their calendars. Scream 7 is scheduled for release in UK cinemas on 27th February 2026.
