Sacked for an Easter Egg? Waitrose Worker Fights Back After Confronting Shoplifter!

Walker Smith, a 54-year-old veteran employee with 17 years of service at Waitrose's Clapham Junction branch, was recently dismissed from his position. His sacking followed an incident where he confronted a shoplifter attempting to steal Easter eggs, a decision that has ignited widespread public and political controversy. The supermarket giant's action has sparked a significant debate regarding employee safety, corporate policy, and the handling of retail crime.
The incident occurred after a customer alerted Mr. Smith to a "repeat offender" who had filled a bag with Lindt Gold Bunny Eggs, retailing at £13 each. A brief tug-of-war ensued between Mr. Smith and the thief, resulting in the bag breaking and the luxury chocolate eggs spilling onto the floor, smashing into pieces. Although the shoplifter fled, Mr. Smith, in a moment of frustration, picked up a piece of broken chocolate and threw it in the direction of some trolleys, insisting he did not aim for the thief. This action, alongside the confrontation, was escalated by his manager.
Waitrose's decision to terminate Mr. Smith's employment was made because staff are explicitly instructed not to approach or tackle shoplifters. The supermarket has defended its policy by citing "serious danger to life," explaining that they have experienced incidents where partners (employees) have been hospitalized while challenging thieves. The company firmly states that its policies are in place to protect staff and customers, emphasizing that "Nothing we sell is worth risking lives for."
The dismissal has provoked furious backlash, with numerous customers vowing to boycott Waitrose stores. Social media was flooded with messages condemning the "disgraceful" decision, with many arguing that employees should not be penalized for trying to prevent crime and protect their workplace. Customers expressed disappointment in how a long-serving employee, who reportedly viewed Waitrose as "his family," was treated.
The controversy escalated further with political intervention. Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp publicly called for Mr. Smith's immediate reinstatement, an apology, and a bonus for his bravery and initiative. In a letter to Waitrose chief executive Tom Denyard, Mr. Philp highlighted the rising problem of shoplifting and argued that dismissing a long-serving employee "sends entirely the wrong message," penalizing those who act while offenders go unchecked. He stressed that staff and the public should be supported and encouraged to intervene, noting the severe impact on Mr. Smith's mental health and his risk of losing his home.
In a show of community support, a GoFundMe page was established by Hannah Spencer to assist Mr. Smith with his bills and rent. The fundraiser quickly garnered nearly £6,000 in donations, reflecting the widespread sympathy and disagreement with Waitrose's stance. Ms. Spencer described Waitrose's action as "terrible treatment," stating that Mr. Smith "simply tried to do the right and noble thing by putting a stop to crime."
Despite the considerable public outcry, Waitrose has maintained its position, stating that the reporting on the incident "does not cover the full facts of the situation" and that a "standard appeals procedure" is being followed. A spokesman reiterated their commitment to partner safety and their long-standing campaign for retail crime to be recognized as a specific standalone offense, indicating a broader systemic issue they are addressing beyond individual incidents.
Meanwhile, Walker Smith is now actively seeking new employment. In a recent social media post, he expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support and joked that his next job "can't involve 'dealing with shoplifters'." Based in Clapham Junction, he is looking for roles in warehousing, customer service, or similar fields, leveraging his 17 years of reliable and conscientious service at Waitrose, while acknowledging the severe personal impact of his dismissal.
