President William Ruto's extensive foreign travel schedule has come under renewed scrutiny as he embarked on a multi-nation European tour following a recent visit to South Africa. His frequent engagements abroad have fueled public criticism regarding their cost and necessity, especially given the various domestic crises Kenyans are currently facing. In his first 20 months in office, President Ruto made an unprecedented 62 visits to 38 countries, a record that significantly contributed to the youth protests that shook his administration in June 2024.

The latest tour, commencing on Sunday, June 7, includes official visits to Belgium and Norway, and a state visit to Finland. According to State House Spokesperson Hussein Mohamed, the primary objectives of this three-nation trip are to attract investments, expand export markets, and forge bilateral partnerships across crucial sectors such as agriculture, clean energy, and technology.

In Belgium, President Ruto is scheduled to engage in high-level discussions with King Philippe and Flemish Minister-President Matthias Diependaele, focusing on trade and investment opportunities. He will also meet with business leaders to explore potential collaborations in manufacturing, value addition, and logistics. A significant part of his agenda involves consultations with European Council President António Costa and European Parliament President Roberta Metsola to advance the implementation of the Kenya-European Union Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA). This agreement is designed to grant Kenyan exports, including tea, coffee, cut flowers, and horticulture, duty-free and quota-free access to the European market, thereby unlocking significant economic opportunities.

Following Belgium, the President will proceed to Norway, where he is slated to meet Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre and Crown Prince Haakon. He will also participate in the Kenya-Norway Business Forum, which aims to foster partnerships in renewable energy, electric mobility, and the blue economy.

The tour will conclude with a state visit to Finland, a reciprocal visit to President Alexander Stubb's trip to Nairobi in May 2025. The discussions in Finland will concentrate on deepening bilateral relations, strengthening cooperation in international contexts, reforming the multilateral system, and promoting trade between Kenya and Finland. Furthermore, President Ruto will join President Stubb in Helsinki for a high-level panel discussion on the United Nations and peace mediation, titled "The Promise of Peace." The two leaders are also set to participate in a trade promotion event at the Nokia Executive Experience Centre in Espoo on June 11, alongside representatives from Finnish and Kenyan companies. Notably, President Ruto will address the Kultaranta Talks, a prominent foreign and security policy forum where Africa is a key discussion pillar this year.

Adding to his extensive travel, President Ruto recently conducted a three-day state visit to South Africa, holding bilateral talks with President Cyril Ramaphosa to strengthen relations between the two leading African economies. This visit further underscores his commitment to foreign engagements, even as concerns persist about the timing and impact of his travels amidst pressing national issues.
