Royal Stir: Meghan Markle Sparks Debate By Highlighting Duchess Title

Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, has once again drawn public attention following her recent visit to Washington D.C. where she appeared as a guest speaker at Fortune's Most Powerful Women Summit. A recent Instagram upload by the Duchess, featuring a montage of her D.C. trip, sparked fresh debate after a subtle clue referencing her royal status was spotted. The video captured Meghan's journey, from being chauffeured past iconic capital landmarks to arriving at the event venue and ultimately boarding her flight back to California. A notable detail emerged in the opening moments: luggage displaying the letters 'DS', widely believed to signify her royal designation, Duchess of Sussex, was seen being wheeled through a hotel corridor.
This discovery reignited discussions surrounding Meghan's use of royal titles, a sensitive topic that previously caused a stir earlier this year. Reports from the Mirror indicated that Meghan had faced scrutiny over the use of her HRH (His/Her Royal Highness) title, which appeared to contradict an agreement made with the late Queen Elizabeth II. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex famously relinquished their HRH titles when they stepped back from senior royal duties in March 2020. However, an image surfaced during a podcast conversation showing a gift card sent by Meghan, stating: "with the compliments of HRH The Duchess of Sussex."
The appearance of the 'DS' initialed luggage coincided with another perceived veiled dig delivered by Meghan during her summit appearance. While discussing her commercial ventures, the Duchess reflected on the period five years ago, around the time of their move to the United States. She described it as "a very different situation," stating her only initial plans were to "nest and heal." Speaking with Fortune's editor-in-chief Alyson Shontell, Meghan elaborated on this period: "You know, Archie was so little, and I had just got pregnant with Lili around that same time, so we were nesting – nesting and healing. And also, I don't know, I had the bandwidth at that time to think about what the big picture dream was. There was no plan. It was just, let's get through these next couple of years, create community, which was always so important to both of us in our new environment. I was probably in Birkenstocks and sweats like the rest of us, especially during Covid, or just barefoot at home, but I was making a lot of jam, so it ended up becoming the thing that really was my passion project."
Since their departure from royal life, the Sussexes have pursued several profitable ventures, including significant contracts with major companies like Netflix. Meghan has also launched her own brand, As Ever, hosted a podcast, and had her own lifestyle program. Her participation in the Washington D.C. summit was part of a busy schedule, which recently included a solo trip to Paris for the Balenciaga show on October 4, followed by a series of appearances in New York alongside the Duke of Sussex. Meghan also revealed a swift 6,000-mile round trip back to California from Europe for just one day to see her "babies," Prince Archie, six, and Princess Lilibet, four, before flying to New York, underscoring her commitment to her family amidst her professional engagements.
