Royal Scandal Deepens: Prince Andrew Silenced Epstein Victim

Revelations from Virginia Giuffre's posthumous memoirs have cast fresh light on Prince Andrew's efforts to manage the fallout from sexual assault allegations and his association with convicted paedophile Jeffrey Epstein. According to her book, Giuffre agreed to a one-year gagging clause at Andrew's insistence, specifically to prevent further damage to the late Queen Elizabeth II's Platinum Jubilee celebrations in 2022. This agreement, which seemed crucial to the Prince, ensured that the monarchy's milestone year would not be further tarnished by the intensifying civil action against him.
Prince Andrew recently made a dramatic move, surrendering his Duke of York title and remaining honours, a decision reportedly made by King Charles III in consultation with the Prince of Wales, aiming to draw a definitive line under the prolonged scandal. However, Giuffre's book, titled "Nobody's Girl: A Memoir of Surviving Abuse and Fighting for Justice," which was set for release on a Tuesday, refocuses attention on the claims and their profound impact on the royal's standing.
Giuffre recounts how Andrew's infamous 2019 Newsnight interview, which he had hoped would vindicate him, instead became an "injection of jet fuel" for her legal team. This disastrous appearance not only strengthened their case but also opened the door to potentially subpoenaing his ex-wife, Sarah Ferguson, and their daughters, Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie, dragging them into the intense court battle. In the interview, Andrew declared he "did not regret" his association with Epstein, who trafficked Giuffre, and faced fierce criticism for his failure to express compassion towards Epstein's victims. He also claimed he had "no recollection" of ever encountering Giuffre and insisted on an alibi involving a visit to Pizza Express with Princess Beatrice on a date Giuffre alleged sexual activity occurred.
Despite maintaining he had never encountered Giuffre, the former duke handed over millions to resolve a civil sexual assault lawsuit with her in 2022. Giuffre claims she secured "more out of" Andrew than the reported 12-million-dollar settlement and two-million-dollar contribution to her charity. This "more" included an "acknowledgement that I and many other women had been victimised and a tacit pledge to never deny it again." Legal papers confirmed Andrew made a "substantial donation to Ms Giuffre's charity in support of victims' rights" and pledged to "demonstrate his regret for his association with Epstein" by supporting the "fight against the evils of sex trafficking, and by supporting its victims."
The agreement averted a public court case, thereby shielding the monarchy from a thorough examination of Giuffre's allegations during a year critical for the Queen's extended June jubilee festivities. Prior to this, in January 2022, a US judge had determined the civil action against Andrew could proceed, leading to the Queen stripping him of his honorary military positions, with the prince also relinquishing his HRH title. There were concerns about Andrew attempting a comeback to public duties when he unexpectedly escorted his mother to Prince Philip's memorial in March 2022. However, he was ultimately absent from the jubilee thanksgiving ceremony and remained out of sight during the main festivities, citing a COVID-19 diagnosis.
Giuffre also detailed how Andrew had "stonewalled" her legal team for months, with settlement discussions only moving swiftly once his deposition was scheduled for March 2022. She expressed her disgust at seeing "two of my abusers together" when Andrew was photographed with Epstein in New York in 2011, and she was "amazed" that a member of the Royal family would be "stupid enough" to appear in public with the convicted paedophile.
Prince Andrew, who still holds the title of prince and resides in the expansive Crown Estate property Royal Lodge, recently stated that the "continued accusations about me distract from the work of His Majesty and the royal family." He asserted that he was putting his "family and country first" and would cease using "my title or the honours which have been conferred upon me."
