Royal Rift Healing? King Charles Extends 'Sweet Olive Branch' to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle

King Charles has reportedly extended a significant olive branch to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, aiming to mend the long-standing tensions that have plagued the royal family since the couple's decision to step back from senior working royal duties in 2020.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex announced their intention to pursue a more independent life in the US in January 2020, initially expressing a desire to continue supporting Queen Elizabeth. However, their status as working royals was officially ceased the following year, though they remained "much-loved" members of the House of Windsor. Relations became particularly strained after their revealing interview with Oprah Winfrey, where they discussed their palace experiences, including allegations of racist remarks made before Prince Archie's birth.
In recent times, these tensions have shown signs of easing. Prince Harry promptly traveled to the UK upon learning of his father's cancer diagnosis. They have since met several times, including a private tea at Clarence House last month, as reported by the Mirror.
The latest gesture, disclosed by the Mirror, involves King Charles deliberately showcasing photographs of the Sussexes throughout his official Northern Irish residence, Hillsborough Castle. These images are prominently displayed in the State Drawing Room, signaling the King's eagerness to repair relations. Notably, no photographs of his brother, Prince Andrew, are on display. A source informed the Mirror that while Royal Historic Palaces make decisions on appropriateness, the ultimate choice regarding family photographs lies with the King.
Despite this apparent outreach, earlier reports suggested the recent meeting between the King and Harry was "distinctly formal," with the Duke allegedly feeling like an "official visitor." However, a spokesperson for the Duke emphatically rejected these claims, stating they were "categorically false" and "pure invention" from sources intent on "sabotaging any reconciliation." The spokesperson also confirmed the exchange of gifts, specifically a framed photograph, though it did not feature the Duke and Duchess.
Hillsborough Castle, situated merely 20 minutes from Belfast, serves as the official Royal residence in Northern Ireland. Since April 2014, the estate has been overseen by Historic Royal Palaces and is open to paying visitors. The castle has been the backdrop for significant historical events, including the signing of the Anglo-Irish Agreement on November 15, 1985, and a visit from President George W. Bush in 2003. It also hosted then-Prime Minister Gordon Brown, representatives from the Democratic Union Party, Sinn Féin, and Irish Taoiseach Brian Cowen to address the Northern Ireland policing crisis just seven years after the Anglo-Irish Agreement.
