Royal Mourning: King, Kate & William Attend Duchess of Kent's Solemn Farewell Amidst Queen Camilla's Absence

Katharine, Duchess of Kent, the esteemed wife of the late Queen's cousin, Prince Edward, Duke of Kent, was laid to rest today following a historic Requiem Mass held at Westminster Cathedral. The solemn ceremony, a significant event in modern British history as the first Catholic funeral for a member of the monarchy, saw King Charles III, Prince William, and Catherine, Princess of Wales, among a gathering of senior royals and close family members. The Duchess, who died peacefully on September 4 at the age of 92 at her Kensington Palace home, will be interred at the Royal Burial Ground at Frogmore in Windsor, alongside 33 other members of the Royal Family, including Queen Victoria and Prince Albert.
The funeral service was marked by deep reverence and personal touches. King Charles III led the mourners, with Prince William and Kate accompanying him. Notably, Queen Camilla was absent, having regrettably withdrawn due to her recovery from acute sinusitis, a decision fully understood by the Duke of Kent. Prince Andrew, accompanied by his former wife Sarah Ferguson, also attended, sharing a warm moment with Prince William and conversing with King Charles. Other attendees included Princess Anne, Vice Admiral Sir Timothy Laurence, Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh, the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester, Prince Michael of Kent, and Princess Alexandra, alongside numerous grandchildren of the late Duchess.
Inside Westminster Cathedral, the service was conducted by Cardinal Vincent Nichols. The Requiem Mass featured a poignant Scottish bagpipe lament, "Sleep, Dearie, Sleep," performed by a piper from The Royal Dragoon Guards, a regiment of which the Duchess had been Deputy Colonel-in-Chief. This lament echoed the one played during Queen Elizabeth II's funeral in 2022. The Pope, Leo XIV, conveyed his heartfelt condolences through Archbishop Miguel Maury Buendia, Apostolic Nuncio to Great Britain, praising the Duchess's "legacy of Christian goodness" and her "devoted care for vulnerable people." The musical selections included Mozart's "Ave verum corpus," chosen by the Duchess herself as a favourite piece. Three of her grandchildren – Lady Marina-Charlotte Windsor, Eloise Taylor, and Albert Windsor – contributed by reading the Prayer of the Faithful.
The Duchess's coffin, crafted from English willow and draped with the Royal Standard adorned with a white ermine border, was carried by eight pallbearers from The Royal Dragoon Guards. A large wreath of British garden flowers, chosen by her family, rested upon it, featuring white roses symbolizing Yorkshire, her birth county, along with rosemary for remembrance, oak leaves for strength, seasonal September flowers, achillea for healing, jasmine for amiability, and sprigs of yew from Hovingham Hall, her childhood home, representing eternal life. Following the service, the Duke of Kent, supported by his daughter Lady Helen Taylor, watched as the coffin was placed into a royal hearse for its journey to Frogmore. The Princess of Wales paid a subtle tribute to the late Queen by wearing Queen Elizabeth II's pearl and diamond necklace.
Katharine Lucy Mary Worsley, born on February 22, 1933, into an aristocratic Yorkshire family, married Prince Edward, Duke of Kent, in a grand ceremony at York Minster in 1961. She was known for her elegant style but preferred a more informal life. A devout Christian, she famously converted to Catholicism in 1994, becoming the first member of the royal family to do so in over 300 years, a decision guided by Cardinal Basil Hume. This conversion was a testament to her deep spiritual journey.
In her pursuit of a fulfilling life away from the public spotlight, the Duchess dropped her HRH style and became known as 'Mrs Kent.' She secretly taught music at state primary schools in Hull and Hammersmith for 13 years, a profession she deeply cherished. Her passion for music and children led her to co-found the charity Future Talent in 2004, which provides opportunities for young musicians from low-income backgrounds. She was also widely remembered for her compassionate nature, particularly her comforting embrace of a tearful Jana Novotna after the 1993 Wimbledon ladies' singles final, and her support for Martina Navratilova.
Her life was also marked by personal struggles, including the heartbreak of a termination due to German measles in 1975 and the stillbirth of her son, Patrick, in 1977. She battled depression, nervous strain, and various health issues, including the Epstein-Barr virus and coeliac disease. Despite these challenges and periods of living separately from the Duke, their bond strengthened after his stroke in 2013. She attended royal family weddings, but notably stepped back from major public events like the Queen's Platinum Jubilee, funeral, and King Charles's coronation.
The Duchess's final resting place, the Royal Burial Ground at Frogmore, holds significant royal history. Located on the wider Frogmore Estate in Windsor, Berkshire, it became a dedicated royal burial site after King George V consecrated it in the 1920s to relieve overcrowding in the Royal Vault at St George's Chapel. Its history is intertwined with the adjacent Royal Mausoleum, constructed in 1862 after Prince Albert's death, where both Queen Victoria and Prince Albert are interred. The Royal Burial Ground saw its first direct interment in 1929 and is home to the graves of many royals, including Edward VIII and Wallis Simpson. Princess Margaret, however, chose not to be buried there, finding it "gloomy," and her ashes were ultimately placed in the King George VI Memorial Chapel.
The Frogmore Estate itself is rich in history, encompassing Frogmore House, a 17th-century manor that has been a royal residence since 1792, and Frogmore Cottage, which famously served as a residence for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. The estate's name, derived from the high number of frogs in its marshy, low-lying area, reflects its natural landscape. The interment of Katharine, Duchess of Kent, at this sacred and historically resonant site, completes a life dedicated to service, music, and quiet compassion, a legacy remembered by the Royal Family and all who knew her.
