Royal Fury Erupts: King Charles Formally Strips Prince Andrew of HRH Title and Privileges

King Charles III has formally and decisively stripped Andrew Mountbatten Windsor, the former Duke of York, of his HRH style and his prince title. This significant change, announced a week prior, was formalized through a letters patent issued under the great seal of the realm on November 3, 2025, and subsequently published by the Crown Office in The Gazette, the UK's official public record. The entry explicitly stated that Andrew Mountbatten Windsor would "no longer be entitled to hold and enjoy the style, title or attribute of 'royal highness' and the titular dignity of 'prince'." Concurrently, a royal warrant dated October 30, 2025, directed his removal from the roll of peerage as the Duke of York.
The King's decision to revoke his brother's birthright and dukedom stemmed from escalating controversy surrounding Mountbatten Windsor's enduring links to the convicted child sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. This included fresh scrutiny following the posthumous publication of Virginia Giuffre's memoir, in which she alleged sexual abuse by the former prince after being trafficked by Epstein – claims Andrew has always strenuously denied.
The monarch utilized his royal prerogative – powers recognized as inherent to the crown – for this removal, after consulting with Cabinet Office officials, rather than resorting to parliamentary means. Letters patent and royal warrants are the instruments through which the monarch bestows and, in this case, removes titles conferred by prerogative. The Lord Chancellor, David Lammy, was instructed by royal warrant to prepare the necessary documents following Buckingham Palace's initial announcement.
Beyond the titles, the King's decision mandates Mountbatten Windsor to relinquish his lease on Royal Lodge, the extensive 30-room Crown Estate property in Windsor where he has resided for two decades. He is expected to move to a private residence on the monarch's Sandringham Estate in Norfolk. Both the government and key members of the Royal Family, including Prince William, have expressed full support for the King's actions.
In one of the few positive aspects for Andrew, he will be permitted to retain his operational service medals, including the South Atlantic medal awarded for his service as a Sea King helicopter co-pilot during the Falklands conflict. Veterans of the war had deemed it 'morally indefensible' to remove a medal earned through active service during his 22 years in the Navy, where he performed critical anti-submarine, anti-surface warfare, casualty evacuation, search and rescue missions, and even acted as a decoy for Argentine Exocet missiles.
The Epstein scandal's shadow continues to loom large over Andrew. Unsealed court documents from a legal battle between the US Virgin Islands and JP Morgan revealed an email where Andrew told Epstein, "we are in this together," a day after an infamous photo of him with Ms. Giuffre was published. Furthermore, Andrew reportedly told Epstein it would be "good to catch up in person" months after the child sex offender's release. Virginia Giuffre's family lauded her
