Rising Star Crowned! Skye Newman Secures BBC’s Sound Of 2026 Triumph

Breakthrough British singer-songwriter Skye Newman has achieved a significant milestone, being named the recipient of the BBC Sound Of 2026 list, an accolade that has historically propelled artists to superstardom. Established in 2003, this influential annual poll gathers votes from over 170 esteemed industry experts, including DJs, festival bookers, critics, and renowned artists such as Elton John, Dua Lipa, JADE, Olivia Dean, Yungblud, and Sam Smith.
Newman, who grew up in south east London, emerged victorious over other promising talents like Sombr, Jim Legxacy, and Geese. Her win places her among a distinguished group of past honorees, which includes global sensations like Adele (2008), Chappell Roan (2025), The Last Dinner Party (2024), and PinkPantheress (2022).
Expressing her elation, Newman stated, “I’m still in shock that I’ve won Radio 1’s Sound of 2026. So many artists that I’ve listened to over the years have been honored with the award, and now me. To think that Sound Of started the year I was born, 2003 and now I’m a winner!” She further extended her gratitude, adding, “I’m so grateful, and wouldn’t be where I am without my people and the BBC supporting me on my journey. Thank you!”
Newman's deeply personal songwriting is exemplified in her hit “Family Matters,” where she explores themes of witnessing drug abuse and experiencing grief at a young age. Her childhood involved multiple moves, and she discovered songwriting as an outlet at age 11, thanks to her jazz and blues singer aunt who introduced her to the craft.
In 2025, Newman made history as the first U.K. female solo artist in over a decade to have her initial two singles, “Hairdresser” (No. 16) and “Family Matters” (No. 5), both climb into the top 20 on the Official U.K. Singles Chart. Her debut project, “SE9 – Pt 1,” named after her childhood postcode, was released in November via Columbia and reached No. 18 on the Official U.K. Albums Chart.
Beyond her chart success, the 22-year-old artist has already built an impressive live performance record. She performed at Radio 1’s Big Weekend festival in Liverpool last year and was personally invited by Ed Sheeran to join him in performing “Family Matters” at his stadium show in Ipswich in July. Following this, she accompanied Lewis Capaldi on his U.K. and Ireland arena tour throughout the autumn.
Looking ahead, Newman is set to embark on her inaugural U.K. headlining tour in April, which includes two nights at London’s O2 Forum Kentish Town. She is also slated to perform at the prestigious Reading & Leeds festivals in August. For 23 years, the BBC Sound Of list has served as a crucial platform for spotlighting emerging musical acts, helping them connect with broader audiences, accelerating their career trajectories, and securing more live bookings for the upcoming year.
