Reps Unleash Scrutiny: Federal Probe Targets Banks, MDAs Over Widespread Illegal Deductions Plaguing Nigerians

The Nigerian House of Representatives has established an ad hoc committee with a crucial mandate: to investigate the alleged illegal deduction of taxes and sundry charges from the earnings of civil and public servants across the nation, alongside the issue of multiple bank charges imposed on customers’ accounts. This significant parliamentary action was initiated in response to a growing chorus of complaints from Nigerian citizens, particularly civil servants, who have reported arbitrary and unclear deductions by both government agencies and financial institutions.
During the inauguration of the committee in Abuja, its Chairman, Hon. Kelechi Nwogu, articulated the profound sense of duty guiding their work. He emphasized that the investigation represents a critical step towards ensuring transparency, fairness, and accountability within Nigeria’s financial system. Nwogu stressed that the legislature could no longer overlook the frustrations of citizens experiencing unexplained cuts from their salaries and bank balances, affirming the House's commitment to addressing these concerns directly to ensure financial practices promote justice and equity.
The committee’s comprehensive mandate includes probing the nature and application of all taxes, levies, and deductions that affect workers' earnings. Furthermore, it will meticulously examine possible cases where deducted funds may not have been remitted appropriately. A significant part of its task involves reviewing a wide array of bank charges, explicitly including Value Added Tax (VAT) applied to existing fees, with the primary objective of ensuring absolute transparency and fairness in these financial practices.
Hon. Nwogu declared the committee's ambition to identify any irregularities, recommend essential reforms, and vigorously advocate for the rights of all Nigerians. He stated that the committee is prepared to make "far-reaching and decisive recommendations, not minding whose ox is gored," indicating a resolve to utilize the full authority of the Legislature when necessary to achieve its objectives. He also called upon all stakeholders, including government agencies, banks, financial regulators, and civil society groups, to cooperate fully with the committee, expressing confidence that its findings would lead to meaningful reforms and promote financial justice.
Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, represented by the Chief Whip, Hon. Usman Bello Kumo, reaffirmed the unwavering commitment of the 10th National Assembly to protecting citizens from financial exploitation. Abbas highlighted that the establishment of this committee unequivocally reflects the legislature’s responsiveness to public concerns and the cries of Nigerians. He underscored that the problem of multiple bank charges erodes public trust and places undue strain on citizens’ finances, asserting that "the demands for transparency and fairness in banking cannot be ignored; they require our immediate attention." Speaker Abbas urged the committee to execute its assignment with integrity, objectivity, and a profound sense of responsibility to the people, promising that the House would act decisively on its findings to ensure fairness permeates Nigeria’s financial system.
