Regina Daniels' Family Crisis Explodes: Actress Breaks Silence as Mercy Johnson Demands Brother's Release
Nollywood actress Mercy Johnson has publicly called for the release of Samuel Daniels, popularly known as Sammy West, who is the brother of fellow actress Regina Daniels. This plea comes amidst allegations that Sammy West was arrested on the direct orders of Senator Ned Nwoko, Regina Daniels' estranged husband and the senator representing Delta North.
The controversy began when Regina Daniels first alleged on Monday that Mr. Nwoko had ordered the arrest of her brother and caused fear for her sister. Sammy West himself confirmed his detention, stating in an Instagram Story post that he was being held at the Ogombo Police Division in Lagos. However, the Lagos State Police Command later refuted these claims hours after they emerged.
On Wednesday, Mercy Johnson condemned the alleged arrest via her Instagram story, labeling it a "worst form of injustice." She highlighted the alarming circumstances surrounding Sammy West's detention, stating, "A child was arrested, no one can or has been allowed to see him for two days, he was flown from Lagos to Abuja, and was allegedly taken to court from the airport."
Further intensifying the situation, another of Regina Daniels' brothers, Sweezzy, alleged on Wednesday that Sammy West was denied access to a lawyer. Sweezzy claimed that Sammy was taken straight to court from Lagos, with no disclosure of the court's location or his whereabouts. He accused Ned Nwoko of "kidnapping" Sammy, despite police confirming it was a "direct charge" and that he was moved to court directly from the airport, questioning the civility of such actions.
Sweezzy also provided a dramatic account alleging severe physical abuse against Regina Daniels by Ned Nwoko, stating, "Regina called upon Sammy after being severely bitten by Ned Nwoko, smashed her head on the wall, pushed down from the step, and her clothes were torn in the presence of her staff." This incident, according to Sweezzy, prompted Regina to involve her brother.
These recent events build upon earlier reports by PREMIUM TIMES, which detailed the couple's troubled marriage becoming public after Regina Daniels alleged physical assault. The 25-year-old actress had reportedly expressed her disinterest in continuing her marriage to the 64-year-old senator, citing an inability to endure the alleged abuse. In response, Mr. Nwoko counter-alleged that Regina was under the influence of hard drugs, which he claimed caused her public outbursts.
Adding another layer to the public drama, Regina Daniels herself shared an emotional video on her official Facebook page early Wednesday morning. Appearing visibly distressed at 5 a.m., having not slept, the 24-year-old actress revealed her family was in "turmoil" but expressed determination to overcome it. She drew courage from the "overwhelming support" of her family and fans, noting that her brother had initiated a petition that garnered significant signatures in a short time.
In a direct and resolute message to her estranged husband, Ned Nwoko, Regina Daniels vowed, "I am going to fight for my children, Ned... I will take them, I will raise them with or without your support. And you know I will do it." Despite her evident emotional state, she maintained composure, asserting her toughness. The primary purpose of her video, she clarified, was to appeal to Nigerians to cease insulting her mother, veteran actress Rita Daniels, who has been facing backlash amidst the unfolding drama.
The couple's marriage, which commenced in 2019 and sparked nationwide controversy due to their significant age gap, has been under strain for months. The ongoing public dispute involves serious allegations of domestic abuse, substance abuse, and now, the alleged wrongful arrest of a family member, as Regina Daniels battles for the welfare of her two young sons.
