Presidential Ultimatum: Tinubu Intervenes in Rivers Crisis as Wike Declares It The Final Say
President Bola Tinubu has intervened again in the ongoing political crisis in Rivers State, in a move aimed at ending the prolonged conflict between the state’s executive and legislature.
The intervention followed a high-level meeting at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, attended by Governor
FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, and other political leaders.
Speaking after the meeting, Wike said President Tinubu acted as a “father figure” to restore peace, stressing that the president has the authority to step in when disputes arise between the governor and lawmakers.
He expressed confidence that this intervention would permanently resolve the crisis, adding that he has instructed all parties to fully comply with the president’s directives.
Wike also said he believes Governor Fubara will honor the agreement reached during the mediation.
The crisis began after a fallout between Wike and Governor Fubara, whom Wike helped become governor in 2023.
Their disagreement centers on control of political structures in Rivers State, leading to serious tensions, including impeachment threats, divisions in the state assembly, and repeated presidential involvement.
Although Wike described this as the president’s second personal intervention, reports indicate it was actually the fourth time President Tinubu has stepped in to resolve the dispute.
The conflict previously escalated to major political actions, including the declaration of emergency rule and the temporary suspension of Governor Fubara and other officials for six months, before they were later reinstated.
In January, lawmakers loyal to Wike launched another impeachment attempt against Fubara and his deputy, accusing them of gross misconduct and constitutional violations.
However, a High Court later stopped the impeachment process, preventing further escalation.
Despite earlier failed peace agreements, Wike expressed optimism that this latest intervention by President Bola Tinubu will bring lasting peace and stability to Rivers State and finally end the political standoff.
