Political Heavyweights Commemorate IBB's 85th: A Call for Historical Reflection

Former Military President, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (retd.), has been widely celebrated on the occasion of his 85th birthday, drawing felicitations and goodwill messages from prominent political figures across Nigeria. Both the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Social Democratic Party (SDP) extended their congratulations, acknowledging his significant contributions to the nation's history and development.

The Peoples Democratic Party, through its Interim National Chairman, Kabiru Turaki (SAN), described General Babangida as one of Nigeria’s most detribalised citizens. In a goodwill message, Turaki commended Babangida’s contributions to the country, noting that throughout his public and private life, he demonstrated qualities that transcended ethnic and regional considerations. "At 85, we celebrate the grace Allah has bestowed upon you and the selfless way you have used that grace, both in your official and personal capacities, making you one of the most detribalised Nigerians ever," Turaki stated. The PDP leadership expressed wishes for the former military president's continued good health, strength, and wisdom as he celebrates this milestone of life and service to Nigeria. The party further highlighted that General Babangida, who governed Nigeria from 1985 to 1993, remains a prominent figure in the country’s political history.

Similarly, Prince Adewole Ebenezer Adebayo, the Presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), joined in congratulating General Babangida, whom he described as a significant figure in Nigeria’s modern political history. Adebayo emphasized the importance for Nigeria to continually learn from its past, preserve historical lessons, and build robust institutions capable of securing a brighter future for generations to come. He highlighted that Babangida’s decades of service as a soldier, military leader, and elder statesman have left an enduring imprint on the country’s political and institutional development. Adebayo noted that the 85th birthday provides a timely opportunity for Nigerians to reflect on the former military leader's pivotal role in some of the nation's defining chapters.

"General Babangida has lived through some of the most defining chapters of our nation’s history. His journey as a soldier, military leader and elder statesman provides an important part of the story of Nigeria and the continuing evolution of our nation,” Adebayo remarked. He further stressed that Babangida’s milestone birthday should also serve as a reminder to Nigerians of the profound responsibilities inherent in leadership and public service. Adebayo, conveying his wishes on behalf of his family, the SDP, and all Nigerians who value the contributions of the nation’s elder statesmen, extended prayers for General Babangida’s continued good health, peace, and wisdom. He also urged fellow Nigerians to respect the experience and wisdom of the nation’s elder statesmen, ensuring that the lessons gleaned from the country’s political history continue to inform and shape its democratic future.
