Political Firestorm: Arewa Project Backs Akpabio, Demands Proof for Viral Allegations

The Arewa Revival Project has publicly defended Senate President Godswill Akpabio against a highly inflammatory social media publication. The publication allegedly quoted Akpabio as stating that Northerners would be made to suffer if President Bola Ahmed Tinubu were to lose the 2027 presidential election. The group vehemently dismissed the alleged statement, labeling it as "deeply inflammatory" and urging for rigorous verification before it is accepted as authentic.

In an official statement released by its Project Coordinator, Hon. Muttaka Ahmed Ibrahim, the Arewa Revival Project clarified that the mere circulation of a graphic containing Akpabio’s photograph and quotation marks does not serve as conclusive evidence that the Senate President actually uttered such words. The group called upon the public and media practitioners alike to demand concrete proof, specifically requesting "the original video, audio recording, transcript, date, venue and credible source from those circulating the allegation."

The Arewa Revival Project issued a stern warning against the dangers of allowing unverified social media content to sow discord and division among Nigerians. It underscored the importance of national cohesion, stating, "Nigeria must not permit unverified social-media materials to become instruments for creating unnecessary division between its regions and peoples."

Beyond defending Akpabio, the group also took the opportunity to commend his leadership as President of the Senate and Chairman of the National Assembly. They described this dual role as particularly demanding, highlighting the intricate balance required between robust political debate and the essential responsibility of ensuring the legislature functions effectively. The group emphasized that leadership at such a high level of government necessitates a combination of "courage, experience, diplomacy, consultation and the ability to manage diverse interests."

Further praise was extended to Akpabio for his perceived commitment to "legislative leadership, national dialogue, institutional cooperation and the strengthening of democratic governance." The Arewa Revival Project pledged its continued support for responsible political participation, insisting that "truth, evidence and national interest must remain at the centre of our public conversation." It advocated for Nigerians to adopt three crucial principles: "verify before sharing. question before believing. unite before dividing."
