Political Earthquake: MTG Claims Republicans Secretly Mocked Trump

Outgoing Republican House member Marjorie Taylor Greene revealed on Sunday that many of her GOP colleagues privately ridiculed Donald Trump before publicly endorsing him after he secured the party's 2024 White House nomination. In a clip from her interview set to air on CBS's 60 Minutes, Greene, a Georgia Republican, stated, "I watched many of my colleagues go from making fun of him, making fun of how he talks, making fun of me constantly for supporting him, to when he won the primary in 2024, they all started – excuse my language, Lesley – kissing his ass." She further remarked that these Republicans, at that point, "decided to put on a Maga hat for the first time," referencing Trump's "Make America great again" slogan.
Greene, who was once a strong ally of Trump, has since had a falling out with the former president and is set to leave Congress in January. Trump has publicly denounced her as a "traitor" and has launched online attacks against her, which Greene claims has incited a wave of threats.
On Sunday, Greene disclosed on X (formerly Twitter) that she has reported hundreds of threats to the US Capitol police. She detailed that initially, these threats originated from those on the political left who opposed Trump. However, she noted a shift, explaining that threats were then directed at her and her son after she opposed Trump's handling of files pertinent to the prosecution of his former friend, Jeffrey Epstein.
Jeffrey Epstein, a disgraced financier and convicted sex offender, died by suicide in 2019 while jailed on federal sex-trafficking charges, during Trump's first presidency. Greene stated, "All of the death threats came from the ‘left’ until I stood with the Epstein Survivors, woman who were raped as teenagers, abused, and trafficked by rich powerful men – and that’s when President Trump turned on me and called me a ‘traitor’ and then new death threats and harassments came from the ‘right’ or somewhere." She added, "I sent these assassination threats on my son to President Trump in which he responded with harsh accusatory replies and zero sympathy."
During her 60 Minutes interview, Greene attributed the public silence of Republicans regarding Trump's actions to fear. She believes they are "terrified to step out of line and get a nasty Truth Social post on them," indicating a significant chilling effect of Trump's influence within the party.
