Political Earthquake: Dion George ABANDONS DA, Blames ANC Capture!

Dion George, the former minister of Environment, Forestry and Fisheries, has officially resigned from the Democratic Alliance (DA) and stepped down from his parliamentary position. This departure follows a public and increasingly acrimonious fallout with DA leader John Steenhuisen. George, who had been a prominent member of the DA since 1995, announced his resignation in an interview, describing the situation within the party as "intolerable" and stating that he was being "pushed out."
In a scathing attack against the party and its leadership, George accused Steenhuisen of being "captured" and alleged that his personal financial vulnerability rendered him incapable of effectively challenging the African National Congress (ANC) within the Government of National Unity (GNU). George further claimed that Steenhuisen was prepared to axe members who championed the interests of the party and the country. He revealed that he had submitted a "comprehensive complaint" to the Public Protector, asserting that Steenhuisen had abused his position as party leader.
George's resignation is set against a backdrop of heightened tension that began with his removal as minister in November of the previous year. Initially, reports surfaced linking his removal to issues of dual citizenship in South Africa and the United States. However, the DA later stated that the request for his removal, initiated by Steenhuisen, was based on concerns regarding George's performance in the ministerial role. George vehemently disputed this characterisation, publicly questioning the stated reasons for his dismissal from cabinet, which further exacerbated the deterioration of his relationship with the party leadership.
Responding to the resignation, Helen Zille, the DA's federal council chairperson, expressed that the party "noted" George’s decision and described it as "unfortunate." Zille highlighted that George's resignation came just before he was due to answer a pending disciplinary charge before the DA’s federal legal commission (FLC). She indicated that it would have been preferable for George to subject himself to the FLC process to address the allegations against him and test their veracity.
The pending disciplinary matter involved three significant sets of allegations. These included claims that staff appointments to George’s ministerial office were conducted in a manner that unjustifiably inflated salaries at public expense. Furthermore, it was alleged that staff within his ministry sought departmental information for use in internal party political matters, and that George himself brought the party into disrepute through his engagement with the media. Despite George's resignation, the DA stated that the FLC process would proceed as determined by its federal executive.
Having served in various senior capacities, including as the DA’s federal chairperson of finance, George's departure marks a significant moment for the opposition party. While his disagreements with the party leadership have played out publicly, no announcement has yet been made regarding his future political plans.
